haha no . I remember every time we used to road trip to the states, when we came back, it would be a smooth ride until suddenly the car started shaking and a loud rumbling was heard. Then we knew we'd crossed the border. :nervous: |

| Doesn't matter who's in charge of the ministry when all the road workers are just standing around a shovel and talking all day long. :nervous: |

Ah, that makes sense. My brother is too (just graduated).
I confused his major with his roommate's for a moment. |

i am more inclined to suspect taht some part of the rehabilitation of the bridge deck caused a significant load shift to crack a fatigued weld connection at the north support.
my $0.02 |
Agreed, I read this in the paper today. Heavy equipment may have been used on the closed lanes also. |

| This might've been a sabotage by the MN gov't to keep all the Somalis in southern areas of the state and out of the Twin Cities. |

I was driving up to visit a friend in northern Minneapolis when the bridge went down. I had no idea that it had happened until my mom called me, panicked, to ask where I was. I left home about a half hour later than I meant to, and nine times out of ten I would take that bridge to get to my friend's apartment, but I took an alternate route through St. Paul instead because I hadn't been paying attention and missed a turnoff to get to 35W. I probably crossed the Mississippi on US52 at 6:30/6:40, about 15-20 minutes after the 35W bridge went down. It's crazy, but a series of coincidences probably kept me from being on that bridge approximately when it came down.
My friend's apartment is just off University, which is the cross-street that meets I-35 at the bridge. We could see the smoke and dust from her patio. Crazy night. The whole city was pretty somber - we eventually went out to dinner, but couldn't really stomach going out for drinks like we'd planned. |

Yeah a friend of mine lives around there too, she goes to Hamline (I think that's the name). I got a call from another friend that lives in the cities like 20 mins after it happened. So I called everyone that I knew but my friend from Hamline is the only one that I haven't heard back from. Hope she's ok :( |

wow, that is crazy. glad to hear you're okay though!
also, guys... let's try to remain respectful in this thread. it's in pretty poor taste to make jokes about such a disaster, especially when there are many people on TA whose friends/families may have been affected by this. |

Yeah, Hamline is nearby. I'm sure she's just fine - they're blocking cell phone usage in the area around the bridge while emergency crews are conducting recovery operations. She's probably just hard to get ahold of for the moment. I'll keep my fingers crossed though. |
