I am vegetarian as well. I am a Hindu so I have been a vegetarian ever since. But, its not really about the religion anymore. I have just been programmed to be vegetarian as I never touched meat except may be chicken every once in a while. I was pretty religious when I was a little kid but as I grew up - it wasnt really about the religion anymore.

I did try meat and stuff and do eat chicken every once a while but thats mainly because of there is not much here for vegans. I got real bored of the same food and started eating meat. But its still very occasional and I try to stick to veggies as much as possible. And yes, I also think it is the right choice as you are not eating blood. Cruelty to animals does suck but its not really about the hippie . May be cos I grew up this way - I cannot stand animals being killed for food ya...its just wrong imo...unless you are starving to death...there is no need to do it...but its everyone's own opinion. (And I understand where the meat eaters come from...some of the dishes I have tasted are just too good :))

Ok, here are some of my responses to some of your guys' resonses:

I thought this was kind of funny, especially since PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (a good thing IMO)

not a vegetarian really, but i started eating steamed broccoli and green beans along with corn and yams, and my body fat dropped significantly without doing cardio.. so its wicked for the body to eat veggies, but i also eat protein which in my case is mostly chicken

Yeah, I agree... I don't eat a whole lot of things that other people eat, like red meat, I try to avoid eggs, french fries, potato chips, pop, white sugar... and then I can eat a whole lot of chocolate and non-fat-free yogurt and I don't gain weight. I wonder if the avoidance of those other things in my diet is helping to cause that :)

i love eating beef, pork, some chicken, cat, dog, rat, hamster, rabbit, etc.
if you choose to not eat that stuff then fine. more for me! :p

I could understand all those except cat. Cat?! I love cats! You mean guy :whip: (just joking :)). But you know, your post is also a bit funny cause my first boyfriend was from Hong Kong and he told me once (while I was eating breakfast) how in there they eat these fried hard-shelled bugs for a tasty treat. And once when I met him, I asked him what he ate for lunch and he said snake soup... and in my mind I was like ugghhh :p yuck... :)

I think that's a good thing to do... when I was still studying at university, there was a group that held this thing called "Veggie challenge" or something like that. They were basically trying to encourage people to try and go without any meat at all for like one week or ten days... and if you participated, you could win a prize... When I was younger, I might have contemplated this, but since becoming so used to eating meat and especially chicken, I thought that it'd be hard for me... If it was like I'd have super tasty and healthy all-vegetarian meals prepared in Paris Hilton's parents' kitchen delivered right under my nose then why not... but just on my own... I thought that I wouldn't be able to do it... so I didn't even bother.

Thank you for your post adi, it was interesting to read... I agree with your assertions about animals - an interesting opinion I once read was that it's not so bad even that we kill animal for food, but how we treat them prior to that (pretty much all their lives) that's condemnable. And I do get a sense that vegetarians or even people concerned about the welfare of animals are sometimes looked upon as being crazy, even I sometimes think of my little cousin as slightly crazy :)

:(

edit: I LOOOOOVE meat but lately I've tried to cut down on it as well. When I do eat it though I try to stick to chicken and fish. Got tired of beef, unless its some really top-notch high quality .

Every year, or maybe twice a year, there is a month long vegetarian challenge in Toronto. I didn't participate because when I saw the flyer, the challenge had just passed, but the flyer itself included a lot of vegetarian resources (websites, a map of veg restaurants in toronto) and encouraged me to try it. You can check veggie restaurants and places in kensington market for the flyer and other resources if you're interested.

The human mind can give up anything if it wants to.

It truly is a pretty eye opening experience when you force yourself to try new things and be innovative with what you eat instead of relying on old favorites.

Not saying you SHOULD want to change, but don't think you can't, either.

same i am hindu , but i was programmed to eat veggies. Also keep in mind i only started eating meat when i moved to Canada. But not i try to avoid too much meat, hasnt been doing my health good. Nothing against meat eaters but as skipper said earlier it costs 10 times more to get meat + unsafe to store over longer period of time and also diseases are common among animals.

my family, who are all meat eaters, is always amazed at the "weird" things i eat. i think its more fun to be a veggie because you have to find new ways to get the protien/nutrients and all the other you need haha.

so maybe im a veggie because im bored.

Ehh. So would be living life without sitting down, but that doesn't exactly mean you should do it just because of that. There are plenty of things we could deprive ourselves of, but if you like it, why stop?

While we're on the topic, there's something I never actually understood about vegetarians (and here I don't mean the ones that don't eat meat cause they think it tastes bad). What are they trying to achieve? I can see the whole "I don't want there to be livestock farms" point, yes, but you can't be seriously thinking 6 billion omnivorous people are just going to stop eating meat. I can even see "well, we need people to get the ball rolling, and I want to be one of those people," but cmon now, it's been how many years? That ball ain't going nowhere. Even the "well all the vegetarians are making a small difference" point can be counter argued that with a rapidly growing population, to make even a small change you need to be turning people into vegetarians left and right, and that just isn't happening. They must know it's completely futile. So what is it then? The desire to be different; the desire to walk into a restaurant and go, "I'll have the only vegetarian item on the menu"?

Meat please.

I'll never understand vegetarians. More meat for moi.
