While we're on the topic, there's something I never actually understood about vegetarians (and here I don't mean the ones that don't eat meat cause they think it tastes bad). What are they trying to achieve? |
Well the only other logical reason beside the 'don't like how it tastes' would be for healthy reasons. Red meat has been proven to significantly increase the risk of heart disease, prostate cancer etc which is why I have significantly cut down on my red meat intake of late. Every once in a while il give in to the temptation and go get a nice beef burger but for the most part I try to keep it to chicken.
But I agree with your point that a lot of people are doing it just to be different because they want to be in that small minority and claim to be different from most people.
Make no mistake, I love animals but like other smart people, I understand that there are some creatures which serve no other purpose on this earth other than to fill our bellies. What the heck are you going to do with a chicken or a pig if your not going to eat it? |

Every year, or maybe twice a year, there is a month long vegetarian challenge in Toronto. I didn't participate because when I saw the flyer, the challenge had just passed, but the flyer itself included a lot of vegetarian resources (websites, a map of veg restaurants in toronto) and encouraged me to try it. You can check veggie restaurants and places in kensington market for the flyer and other resources if you're interested. |
Thank you for that info sweet Skipper, I'll look into it :) I've never actually been to a purely vegetarian restaurant myself, I've been contemplating with my friend of going to try one, but so far it hasn't materialised. So I hope someday later I'll have a chance to experience it :)

It truly is a pretty eye opening experience when you force yourself to try new things and be innovative with what you eat instead of relying on old favorites.
Not saying you SHOULD want to change, but don't think you can't, either. |
That's nicely said. :) And I agree... But I think that everyone has to come to that desire themself first, otherwise it won't really work...

my family, who are all meat eaters, is always amazed at the "weird" things i eat. i think its more fun to be a veggie because you have to find new ways to get the protien/nutrients and all the other you need haha.
so maybe im a veggie because im bored. |
Hey no, any kind of reason is good! :) My cousin is the only one in her family who doesn't eat meat at all, and whenever she comes to visit our grandparents, they have to cook separate meals for her. And you know what, if you as a vegetarian are aware of the fact that you're lacking some nutrients that meat-eaters get easily, and you plan and monitor your meals so that you get as many of those nutrients from other, healthy plant-based sources and vitam supplements in other foods (i.e. in cereals), then you might actually be eating a more healthy and nutritionally diverse diet than ordinary people who just rely on meat to fix all their needs :) At least in my opinion :) |

i love vegetables and i only eat fish/chicken most of the time
red meat ftl.
ps. the most traumatizing experience for me was when my dad caught this huge fish and he brought it home but it was still alive, i was watching him cut it's head off and it brought tears to my eyes, i didn't eat that fish after |

Thank you for your post adi, it was interesting to read... I agree with your assertions about animals - an interesting opinion I once read was that it's not so bad even that we kill animal for food, but how we treat them prior to that (pretty much all their lives) that's condemnable. And I do get a sense that vegetarians or even people concerned about the welfare of animals are sometimes looked upon as being crazy, even I sometimes think of my little cousin as slightly crazy :) |
Thats true yaa...it is also about the treatment animals get before dying. And this is where I don't like the concept of Halal or Kosher meat. With Halal, you first pray to God that you are eating the animal for your survival which is nice but after that you cut the animal's neck slowly...The animal dies a slow painful death. I think this is a very brutal thing to do. At least let the animal die peacefully for God sake.. |

During one of my past 30 something trips to Montreal, I saw a truck leaded with pigs with their snout out. For some reason that completely turned me off.
I didn't act on it right away. But since June 1st, I haven't eaten meat. I've eaten fish (mostly sushi) about 3-4 times since, but that's all my cheating.
I don't feel any different, and it's not impacting my sports performance. And I play lots of sports. Monday is beach vball for at least 90 minutes, Tuesday is one hour of hockey then at least 1.5h of vball, Wednesday is soccer and maybe tennis and maybe a little hockey, Thursday is vball, Friday is vball too. On the week-end when I'm not driving to Montreal, I play at least one other sport. One the occasion I swim too.
So yea, even with this sports schedule, being vegetarian is working for me :)
Please stop with the silly arguments. Vegetarianism and Veganism are individual choices. It doesn't make you a , but doesn't give you any moral high ground to bitch at the omnivorous either. |

If I give up anything, it'll be the heroin. |

Hahahah the exact same thing happened to me. I was in MTL and saw a truckload of pigs (but they were slaughtered already). I am pretty sure I have only eaten pork maybe three times at the most since then (which was two years ago). |

As the wise Homer Simpson once said
" You Don't Make Friends with Salad..."
and this one...
Homer: Wait, wait, wait Lisa honey, are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No!
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No!
Homer: Pork chops ?!?
Lisa: Dad! Those all come from the same animal.
Homer:Yeah right Lisa, a wonderful "magical" animal, hehehe. |

Ehh. So would be living life without sitting down, but that doesn't exactly mean you should do it just because of that. There are plenty of things we could deprive ourselves of, but if you like it, why stop?
|
I'm simply saying don't sell yourself short and say you could never give something up.
I've already provided enough of a response to the "why stop" question.
Kamka, Fressen on Queen has some really inventive dishes - it's all vegan. Fresh by juice for life is vegetarian and has 3 locations in Toronto - it's more casual with wraps, salads, soup...I eat there a few times a month it's so good! |
