something to think about!
"Western men die some five years earlier than women. They suffer more from nearly every medical disease and ailment that there is. And yet, far more money is spent by governments on women's health than on men's health. Men are also nowadays educationally disadvantaged significantly compared to women; with the curriculum, the teaching methods and the resources being designed to cater far more for women and girls than for men and boys. Men make up 80% of the homeless. There are more of them in social service care-homes as boys. They are many times more likely to be wrongfully arrested, wrongfully imprisoned, mugged, assaulted or murdered. They are 5 times more likely to lose their children when families break down, 4 times more likely to lose their homes, 4 times more likely to commit suicide, 20 times more likely to be killed or injured at work, 20 times more likely to be imprisoned, and, probably, more than 100 times more likely to be demeaned, denigrated and ridiculed by the mainstream media. Men also pay much more in taxes than women but receive far less in benefits from the government.
In other words, when compared to women, men are significantly disadvantaged when it comes to their health, their lifespans, their homes, their children, their education, their families, the tax burden, the law, the benefit system, and even when it comes to their own personal safety.
They are nowadays also being heavily discriminated against in the work place.
How is it possible, therefore, that women are being 'oppressed' more than men?
In what areas?
Where?" |

| i agree that men have more health problems due to genetics. but we still have a huge advantage (unfair?) over women in lots of things, mostly job related. |

Actually, the correlation between height and salary is probably quite interesting; in general, probably, taller people get paid more than shorter people, probably. |

Men are taller than women in general! This must be the reason for the salary gap! Maybe if there were more 6'5 women, things would be easier. |

i knew someone was going to mention the wage gap...anyways there are reasons for these wage gaps. its not that women are unfairly being paid less.
i'll summarise the reasons really fast but i suggest that if you are interested on why the wage gap exists, to read the book that can be found here for download in pdf format, free of cost. its an interesting read and explains quite a bite.
http://www.ebookee.com/Why-Men-Earn...t-It_57661.html
anyways, i have read the following statistic recently in many places and this is used by many equal pay organisations and bodies to close the pay gap.
"for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns $0.80 "
but If an employer had to pay a man one dollar for the same work a woman could do in 80 cents, why would an employer hire a man? i mean it makes no economic sense. eventually, using the law of economics, all men would be out of jobs and women would be occupying all of them earning their 80 cents (men would earn nothing!)
Women from National Organisation for Women (NOW) state ”Male bosses are blinded to the positive contributions that women make to productivity so they don’t realize they are hurting themselves economically”
If male bosses are to blame, then why are women running their own businesses (i.e. no bosses above them, male or female) netting only 49%(1) of their male counterparts?
Reasons why men earn more in brief: (Ill be more than happy to provide you with references and sources upon request)
1) Men work more
a)Extra jobs and overtime
i)average full-time working man works 45 hours per week, while his female counterpart works 42 hours per week(2)
ii) more men will work night shifts (nightshifts pay higher)
iii)more men than women, statistically, work overimte (overtime hours pay more than normal working hours. i believe 1.5 times more.)
when all the numbers are added up, men will obviously earn more. because on an average, men will do more work and thus earn more (i am not trying to be biased against women btw)
coincidentaly, women will actually earn more than men for working any where from 25 hours to 39 hours. hope the following numbers explain it (i am unable to attach pictures on my thread thus the following typed data)
HOURS MEN WOMEN
25-29 $115 $154
30-34 $173 $231
35-39 $346 $371
40-45 $577 $481
so women earn MORE than men as shown above(taken from US censs beaureau 2003)
b) Men have more years of uninterrupted work experience in their current occupation
i) Working women are eight times likely to spend 4 or more years out of the labor force than are men(3)
ii)A working woman is nearly nine times more likely than a man to leave the workplace for six months or longer for family reasons(4)
c)Women are more likely to retire earlier than men
Average age of retirement for women is 48 while men retire at 53.
thats why men will end up earning more money.
2)
a) Men work high paying, unattractive, hazardous jobs.
hazardous, unsafe and unattractive jobs will always pay more than safe and comfortable jobs. occupations like firefighters, truck drivers, construction workers earn alot more per hour because no one else is willing to do them. 95% of men end up doing these jobs thus they get paid more.
b) Women are less likely to work jobs with no or low fulfillment and job satisfaction.
for example Prison guards earn up to 70,000 dollars annually. BUT, there is no self fulfillment or job satisfaction. and only men end up doing these jobs. thats why, the stats show that men earn more. women are less likely to do these sorta jobs.
above are just s few reasons why numbers and statistics show that men earn more than women.
NO, its not because women are being discriminated or being treated fairly. Men earn more for a reason.
i hope that sorta explains the wage gap question. anyways, i dont want to start an argument here nor do i mean any disrespect to men or women.
my point is, why pin point and rant about one difference that people have been going on about for the past three decades? i mean look at the greater picture. look at circumstances as a whole. once again, i i dont mean any disrespect to any user of this forum. my apologies if someone feels offended.
