Personally, I thought M&S completely blew chunks.....I almost left because it was so bad....just terrible tracks and the mixing seemed off to me.

I couldn't disagree with you more, I thought they did a in amazing job opening. Was very impressed with their style, wouldn't have thought they could do it so well. |

i thought joe and fab did a fantastic job setting up lawler for his set even though lawler had them on a leash. i think lawler lost the crowd's energy for the first 30-45 minutes or so but he got everyone back in the groove. |

yea i thought m+s played an awesome warmup set!!! and they played ALOT of hot new tracks which made the set even more fun! the only thing that pissed me off was it sounded like lawler cut off their last track (paul rogers - kicked) abruptly :whip: ... i love how it kicks in after the last break and I didnt get to hear it or maybe I did and I was just too mangled to tell which leads me to the next point
by the time steve came on I was pretty much TKO for the night haha!!! and everything after was a big giant blur lol ...
DOH
too much drinky drinky for me!!!

normally I enjoy M&S but I just wasn't feeling them.....it could have been that I was just overly excited to see lawler.
I agree that lawler seem to have lost the crowd at the beginning....but he picked it up and finished strong. |

is this common practice in the DJing industry? |

Thats what i was wondering too.
I have seen other people posting that said other DJs have requested that the opening DJ play a mediocre set and don't drop any big tunes...
Do certain DJs request that? or is it kind of like standard DJ code that if you are the warm up DJ not to put your A game on to overshadow the headliner... |

opening djs arent supposed to be tearing the roof off the place at 11pm before the headliner comes on. they should be exercising some restraint. its an unspoken rule, and just tactful. |

It's common practice for an opening DJ to warm the crowd up for who they are opening for. People come and pay for the headliner (majority of the time) so you need to know who you're opening for and what the crowd wants, all the while mixing in your own style and flavour.
Opening sets are some of the hardest sets I've played because you have to build and crescendo the crowd to what the headliner likes and is going to be playing.
Kenneth Thomas gave me an awesome analogy once. He said "Opening sets are like a train, you have to start it from a standstill and work it so that the train is up to full speed and ready to go. Then the headliner takes off once the train is at full speed and has full range to do what he's there to do."
Too many times does an opening DJ think that they've got their one shot to impress people/promoters/club/other DJ's and play all they've got for their time. Unfortunately that just puts a damper on the night as the headliner wonders wtf you're doing, not to mention it ends up hurting your chances of coming back again.
Again, opening is one of the hardest jobs of the night. |
