Learn to spell... (pg. 2)

I was sort of referring to the more 'fresh off the boat' crowd who've spent the majority of their life speaking another language for a few decades and only recently picked up english.
World is far funnier with 'engrish' anyway :D

iv actually used english for only 8 years of my life :o

actually i think its a good thing, using english. its a dull language but its so universal.

For things like their sentence structure though you'll notice that sometimes on a casual basis they'll fall back into a mix of ethnic and english languages as its just how their wired to think and write as they would say it.
It's not because they're stupid, they're simply thinking as they would normally in a manner which is different to the english sentence structure, so I do disagree on Orwell in that regard.

I mostly agree with what you said. Personally, I think if you learned it as your first language, there's really no excuse for poor grammar and spelling. By disregarding punctuation, capitalization, and basic rules (i.e. mixing up "their", "they're", and "there", which nobody should still be doing after fifth grade), a person willingly labels him or herself as someone who just doesn't care, which shows complete lack of respect for their audience, because it's essentially laziness. And I have little respect for that attitude.

PS: Rather ironically, I believe that Orwell was talking about clarity of expression rather than grammar, punctuation and what-not. :)

It's obvious that a lot of people who know how to speak/read/write in English are just lazy to spell properly, in full length words an with punctuation. That is more of a piss than someone who is only semi confident with using English and messes up.

Well that comes back to intent more than the delivery in the end, between someone who can be bothered and isn't lazy, put down their thoughts is achieving more than someone who wanders through life without the care to stand up for what they believe.
I don't think that it should be entirely based on literacy, because by many accounts in just meeting people I've known many who read and write with astounding ability, but never exerted their opinion or thoughts. Just as I've met people who spend their school age years drafted into a militia, didn't pick up a pencil to even so much as know how to write their own name until they where 15 or 16, but you can be damn sure they knew all too well how to think.

Not at all, it can apply to all levels of life without needing to be an 'extreme' process, people should be meticulous about how they plan their life as their chances of getting a new one after they die are hypothetical and fixing one that's a mess is generally a lot more trouble... especially if they don't learn from that experience of making an error.

i will frequently skip posts if their grammar or spelling makes it difficult for me to understand what theyre trying to say. im lazy with punctuation, but will use it when it prevents ambiguity (were and we're).

if youre gonna write something down, why NOT make it easy for others to understand? do you also mumble when you speak?

pkcRAISTLIN
oh, and as for people that use "trendy" spelling on internet forums- i think youre all wits.
