Yes, as a general rule it does reflect on intelligence.

Smart people, barring language-specific neurological deficits, will have an easier time learning a brain-intensive task like writing a language, and they'll end up doing it better than a dumb person will. That applies whether we're talking about a first, second, or Nth language.

The other two big mediating factors in a person's language usage are laziness and level of consideration for others. Lazy and inconsiderate people won't generally learn or use a second language very well (unless they have some other very strong incentive). They'll just barrel on ahead and try to express things without bothering about being precise in grammar or spelling.

Saying that writing reflects educational background is true, but educational background itself also reflects on intelligence. Smart people have an easier time of education because they learn more quickly, so they tend to educate themselves more extensively than dumb people, who find learning too tedious and frustrating.

I don't know what it's like now, but 10years ago I had yet to find a more uninteresting and dull method of learning than the rote system used by most educational institutions.
Remember, regurgitate, repeat until pass.
It works, but a lot more could be done to stimulate the intellectual process of having to do it in what's a most uninspiring, cut and dried manner, 'course teachers don't get paid an awful lot and young people can be complete bastards so I guess the incentive isn't exactly there.

My boss is completely terrible when it comes to spelling, grammar, capitalization; it's really quite unbelievable some of the things that come through on his e-mails. Initially, I though it was just in the quick notes that he places in forwards but, no, it's also in e-mails that he is originating AND e-mails that his boss sees as well.

The thing that I don't get is that he's an incredibly smart guy, very professional, excellent at his job, and well respected by everyone around him (including me). My only estimation is that his brain is moving faster than his fingers and he just can't be arsed.

Or maybe he is dyslexic.

Eh, professionally you should use proper grammar but as far as online conversations go I don't think it should be that strict.

This is very true, but "educational background" need not consist wholly of formal schooling (or even include it at all). Smart people are (at least in my experience) also more driven to learn "brainy" things on their own, things which include learning a new language or trying to improve the way they use their first one.

i was talking about his definition of smart and dumb.
