Anyone know a thing or two about Jetta engines?

Just came back from the store my "check engine" light flew on and my turbo is whinning louder than it really should - like higher pitched than it normally is.
anyone have these problems before? I have a 20V - 1.8L Turbo on a 2002 Jetta. |

| Basically my question is can I drive on it to go into town? (20 miles each way) or should I not risk it? |

Check engine lights are usually emissions related. Probably an oxygen sensor. There are quite a few places that will scan the codes for free.
Another thing that will trigger it is the gas cap not tightened enough or cheap gas. |

hey we have the same car but mine is a 2003.
but no, sorry. i don't know about engines. i probably wouldn't risk it though if it sounds like something is obviously wrong. |

mine came on a few weeks ago and the guys at the Valvoline oil change placed checked it for me for free. it ended up being tripped off by an exhaust/catalytic converter error code but i still haven't gotten it looked at since the light went off and never came back on. |

You can take the drive. VWs are known for random check engine lights. I dont even flinch when mine comes on...a few days later it goes away.
BTW I have a 2001 GTI.

Oye!!! Another V-dub fan!!! i have a 2002 GTI. I wrecked it a couple weeks ago driving from Ohio to Cali haha i wanted to kill myself. But once i get her back im going to be doing a ton of upgrades. First on the list is a carbon fibre intake!:D

Listen to him. Check engine lights mostly come on because of 2 reasons. The one L.E.N. just mentioned and/ the second reason is that you have trouble with the catalytic converter. It's pretty uncommon for both items to fail at the same time so it has to be one of those two problems. A catalytic converter cleans polluted fumes from your car and controls the noise.
The O2 sensor (aka oxygen sensor) is connected to the converter or right next to it from what I remember.
But before you go out buying these 2 parts go to AutoZone and see what's the real problem. They do FREE diagnostic checks. If you go to the dealer or a certified mechanic they will charge you 90 dollars.
In my opinion, I have a strong feeling it's your converter which controls the noise and bad fumes. |
