Moving to Montreal (pg. 3)

If you want to look elsewhere (ie: cheaper) than downtown and the surrounding area, then there are a few other places to look at that are less urban...a bit more subruban, but still not that far from downtown. Housing will be generally cheaper, and you'll likely get a larger space WITH parking.

St. Laurent, Cote St. Luc, possibly Lachine (some parts of Lachine are CRAP...others are not bad) and Mount Royal could be some good potential places.

I like St. Laurent (or Ville St. Laurent). I was raised there, lived there all my life. Its got everything you need, malls, shops, public transit and 2 Metro stations. It is really centrally located, which is especially important if you have a car. All the major highways converge there, so its easy to get anywhere you want to go. Downtown is a quick 10-15 minute drive from St. Laurent (depending on traffic), or maybe 20 minutes by Metro. Live close to the Cote Vertu metro station, and you're good to go!

I paid $165K for a nice 2 bedroom condo on Cote Vertu st. a few years ago. I recently sold the place for around $210K, and moved further west. I dont work downtown, so I dont need to be close.

But yeah...if you can afford it, it would be best to live downtown or in the surrounding area. But if youre going to comprimise and live in a cracked out place JUST to live downtown, then maybe another area would be best.

So how long have you guys lived in Montreal? (since always? or moved there?).... how does everyone like it?

I'm stoked to go to some sweet parties.

I've been living here for 6 years...best years of my life. :)

I absolutely adore this city, despite the bone-crushing cold winters and everything. This is my home, this is my sanctuary..

I've lived in many places but never felt 'home' till I moved here.
In my opinion, Montreal is the best city on Earth.

When I first moved here, my family and I lived in Westmount...very quite and peaceful place to live, which was ok but I was bored as hell...I think it's cool to live there when you're like 80 years old. =P

Now I live in the red hot center of Downtown, and I LOVE it. I like action and motion and things happening everywhere...I'm a city girl. So if you're anything like me, I think you would thoroughly enjoy living downtown.

Cheers! And looking forward to taking you out once you move here. :D

hahah that's similar to what happened to me in victoria. When i first moved here i went to Oak Bay - old people central - peaceful but boring as hell. Then I moved closer to downtown, and now i'm back in between the two... haha.. got a bit of both worlds.

I am pretty stoked about this move, and I'm doing as much research as possible - but there is nothing better than people's experiences! So thanks!! :D

We will definitely need to celebrate somehow.. I cant sit at home in this action-filled city and drink wine by myself. blegh.

malek - sweet, I'm hoping to expand my photo career over there.

i've got a question about the real estate... if anyone cares to answer.
a lot of the places i've looked at in the last few months, the kitchen is shown without any appliances. I don't know how it works here in BC, but every place i've ever lived in, or my parents bought, the appliances were included lol
(i mean, like fridge, dishwasher, etc)

example (just a random one i found):

sigh, do i have to look at buying new appliances when i move too? lol (unless i find a place that for sure includes them)

rent: some places will supply you, others won't.

buying: new places will give you an option to buy the appliance, but i would be very surprised that this transforms into savings to you. Old places, negotiable with the owner.

ah, okay. Thank you :) I guess I will just go with the flow when i find places i like and go from there.
new appliances are always nice, woot.

You're gonna love Montreal. I lived there for about 20 years (I'm 26) and although I currently live in Saskatchewan *sigh*, Montreal will always be home.

I've been to pretty much every major Canadian city and even though they all have certain perks (low taxes/high salaries in Edmonton, Victoria is beautiful, etc.), none have them have quite the "flavor" that Montreal has. The nightlife, the liberal attitude, the activities...all of it make Montreal an awesome place to live.

And on top of it, housing is relatively cheap for a metropolitan city. You shouldn't have a problem finding something decent in your price range.

Jester made some good suggestions for places to go.
Other things to do when you arrive:

- Go to Beach Club.
- Go to at least one Massive, i.e. Sensation, Resolution, Bal en Blanc. The first one will blow your mind ;)

There's probably a ton of stuff I'm missing but I'm sure you'll find your way.

you moved out forever?? :whip: hehe whats in sask? a job? girl?

Military pilot training in Moose Jaw.

I've been here for 6 months and will probably be done in February. Then back to Montreal until July, followed by more training in Winnipeg.

After joining the military, I've come to realize just how good we have it in Montreal. There's no EDM scene whatsoever in Saskatchewan. There are no stripclubs. Canada's highest crime rates are in Regina and Saskatoon. Moose Jaw's idea of fine cuisine is Boston Pizza. Oh and one more thing, the weather. It was so cold today, we couldn't taxi because the aircrafts brakes were frozen! Trust me, you haven't felt cold until you've lived in the Prairies. It's currently -34C with the windchill.

goodgreef
ooh military pilot? that's really exciting. I've taken some pilot/flight lessons (the intro ones), and really want to persue it for a private license, but the $$$ is ridiculous.

What's the Beach Club?

i hear for the realest poutine of them all, i have to go to princeville.

you mean the realest in BC? :p

Beach club is a club on an artificial beach with an artificial lake, pools and a dancefloor sprinkled with water. Its awesome on the weekend for those wanting a tan and enjoying house music.
