With regards to PVD, all I can say is WOW. Now THAT is how you do a proper set.
Line-up was quite fast, and entry was smooth running.
Got there with some friends around 11pm, and saw that nobody was on the decks. Turns out Oliver bailed somewhere for a few minutes before returning to the decks while a record/cd was playing.
Oliver's opening set was pretty bad. I love house, techno, and minimal but I was not feeling that opening set AT ALL. Alcohol did not help either. I was mingling with a bunch of people during Oliver's set and I saw a lot of people yawning or just standing around. If you looked at the crowd, with the exception of one or two tracks they were not feeling Oliver's set either. I met some househeads in the washroom and they all could not stand Oliver's set. Track selection and set flow was inconsistent and his mixing was REALLY off in several places. I've heard Mark quite a few times and this was definitely the worst set I've heard from him.
Good thing PVD came on (1am) when he did because the atmosphere was ruined by Oliver and the crowd was getting restless.
AMAZING intro from PVD playing New York City live. The minute the bassline kicked in for 'NYC' the crowd went nuts. I was shocked by the amount of variety PVD had in his set. He went from trance, to techy hard beats, to breaks to house. PVD had 2 laptops set-up, some mini-studio equipment and his keyboard on top of the usual deck set-up. A large part of his set was live. Don't know if others picked up on it, but PVD was doing a lot of layering and live effects on many tracks. He also did a lot of mashups and live cuts, absolutely outrageous. His mixing was nearly perfect amd he kept the crowd moving the whole time.
I however did not really like the crowd. At 2am it was a sardine can in the middle of the dance floor. Sad to say, there were a lot of smelly people in the crowd compare to any other time I've been in Guv. Don't know about the whole "person pissing in the dancefloor" deal but I did notice the (infamous) "rotten fish" smell while dancing in the middle of the floor. There must be some Guv regulars that come in and bring this smell with them.
Amazing night overall from PVD, had a few issues with the crowd but still a worthy night.
Were you at the same party as everyone else? PVD played for 3 hours not 2 and I feel sorry for you if you payed $60 for a ticket. Most people got their tickets for $40-45. Besides, what were you expecting? PVD is a huge international star and it's only common sense that tickets would be fairly pricey.
PVD had not been in Toronto for years, so played a variety to please the fans and to move the crowd. In case you didn't notice, PVD also catered to the Toronto crowd with a few tracks. Fact is, people here in the city love commercial(and sometimes cheesy) music. The whole music scene in general in Toronto is quite commercial but that's another discussion.
His "20 min outro" included an encore if you payed attention. The crowd was screaming for more so PVD played more. Are you seriously criticizing him just because he pleased the crowd?
You may not have liked his set, that's fine. But you cannot criticize a DJ for keeping the crowd moving and then getting the crowd begging for more. A huge key in being a good DJ is keeping the crowd moving.
WOW what an amazing review couldn't have said it any better :) I don't think I even got a proper dance warm up last night and once PVD was on I literally had to stretch 20 minutes into the set bc my legs were not warmed up and he wasn't wasting anytime!!!
in amazing times.....:toocool:

It was only a sardine can in the middle of the dancefloor, which means it was a HUGE improvement on a typical Guv/KoolHaus event. This is the first time since Decadence a few years back that I actually had enough space to dance the way I like and still see the DJ :-p
I agree with anyone who says 3 hours (to the minute, btw, including his "encore") was a dissapointment, but for 2 and a half hours is was damn good. Not PvD's best, but still my best night out since Andy Moor in Viva a long time ago.
As for Mark O, I've NEVER enjoyed a set by him in my life. He never seems to be able to make up his mind where he wants to take a set, what style of music he's going to play, or whether he's going to spin real tracks, or z103.5 extendamixes. Last night, and maybe it was just the alcohol, he actually had me moving, so I'll props him for getting me moving for the first time evar during one of his sets, even if he had alcohol to help him out.

+1 I think that was one of the best sets MO played in a long time... though last couple of times he played pretty well, I liked his set @ Blank & Jones in October as well.
