Dead Laptop

Damn it.

It was working fine up until an hour or so ago, when it died.

The battery light is flashing red, but the light that indicates it's plugged in doesn't light up until I try to boot it up. It starts to boot, but then just dies on the Windows XP loading screen.

Is it likely to be something so simple as a ty power cable? Or, since I already know that the battery is pretty damn shagged, could it be that the battery is so dead that it won't even boot while plugged in?

Could be that the power supply shorted the battery and the battery is just dead. Hopefully it didn't fry your motherboard too :(

Yeah could be, though I don't think it's killed the motherboard, because it started to load windows, but then cut out.

Or, I could be way off.

If I can't get it to work, I'll douse it in cranberry juice :p

No, it doesn't lock, it just cuts right off, and the fan stops running.
