Come on George, Hugo is getting a bit extreme now isn't he? A LOT of Venezuelans are against what he is planning on doing. If you read the article, even his base, poor people in the slums, are against what he is doing. I guess we will find out today anyways. |

I don't think he is being "extreme" in the slightest. What's extreme about making new laws and putting them to a public vote? |

nothing if the laws were not meant to keep said lawmaker in power in addition to making said lawmaker more powerful.
in a democracy that should warrant plenty of room for critcism. it would be ridiculous to think there shouldn't be any. |

I agree with that much. If he upholds the results of the referendum, whatever it may be, then yes I would agree with you. It is democratic. But as I suggested before, he was hinting at applying his suggested reforms even if the result from the referendum is no. I guess we will find out what happens soon anyways. |

Just one more piece of evidence that Chavez is as democratic as they come. A 51% defeat in most democracies would have been contested, let alone in a "dictatorship". He should now just concentrate on his reforms and if they are successful and popular with the people he should hold another referendum on the same issues just before his term runs out.

Say the man from the country who's President was originally the weakest institution and is now the Emperor? Every political system has undergone change and evolution, there is no problem whatsoever in having unlimied terms, many countries do. Chavez put it to a democratic vote and lost, fair and square - and conceded immediately - is that something we could have expected from Venezuala's totalitarian opposition? |

Sorry but that wasn't Chavez but the people that spoke.
Remember they voted against Chavez.

Foes of the reform effort — including Roman Catholic leaders, media freedom groups, human rights groups and prominent business leaders — said it would have granted Chavez unchecked power and imperiled basic rights.

It appears your reasoning isn't even in line with why the people voted against him... |

How would a "dictator" have reacted to a 2% defeat?
This puts laid to rest once and for all any notion that Chavez is not democratic |

"This was a photo finish," Chavez said immediately after the vote, adding that unlike past Venezuelan governments, his respects the people's will.
At least until the next round of "disappearances," that is. |
