interesting article..

MSTRKRFT have done something most Toronto electronic music artists can't - they've broken out into the global scene and have become hipster household names. Earlier this year the superstar duo played to a wild crowd at Coachella and more recently they dropped in on the annual "I Love Techno" festival in Belgium, along with some of the world's most influential acts (Justice, Adam Beyer, Felix Da Housecat, Ben Sims, Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco, Ellen Allien, and Underworld, to name a few). The festival was completely sold out at a whopping (and bopping) 35,000 people.
They gave an interesting (and fidgety) interview before the gig, and had a few things to say about Toronto. When asked about our city, they we're quick to suggest that it's not where they'll stay.
"We'll move to the Bahamas, we'll move to Los Angeles, we'll move to Hawaii, or we'll move to Tokyo. We'll move to Miami. But like, everyone leaves, so it's kind of a tough spot. We have great parties, but, you know, if you're making electronic music or you're making dance music there's much better places for us to be."

| Looks like even our own producers aren't huge fans of the city, damned politics have RUINED it. We could be so great. |

| I don't see the shocker. Toronto is a great stepping stone. |

i don't know if it's so much the politics as opposed to the market .. i'm sure they'd get a lot more exposure elsewhere.. not to mention better weather :wtf:

True enough, but you have to admit if there were better politics involved, we had more support scenewise it would be a huge boost in having talent stay here. Although if I were in that situation I'd move...lol. |

not really.. some people here cry sacrilege when it's announced that PVD is playing on 103.5 .. how does that support dance music?

I was pretty surprised to see them on the bill. It's a huge accomplishment for them, particularly when they aren't straight up techno by any stretch of the imagination (but neither is I love techno itself, unfortunately).
As far as Canadian techno talent goes, most of it has moved elsewhere to further their career so I'm not really surprised to hear them say that. |

A lot of acts from around the world move to the States for exposure. Do what's best for your career, nothing wrong with it. |

politics influence this scene A LOT, after living in other parts of the world and seeing scenes there this scene's influence by politics is quite high.
Toronto has a great crop of locals that have so much going for them...I LOVE the fact I've had my nights saved by a familiar face on more than one occassion....especially DJs such as Barato and Lio, who keep is consistently wicked on a regular basis :), if this scene isn't damaged too significantly by politics/ridiculousness we could become quite known in the future for our local talent :) |
