Do we complain when we get an extra day off! I cant believe all the whiners and moaners about family day! The US gets 11 stat holidays a year, Europe gets 15-20. Im pretty sure we can handle bringing it up from 8 to 9!
For once i actually agree with dullton mcguinty.
As for the unions crying about it? a) you already get more days off than the rest of us (easter mon, rememberance day, etc etc). b) unions are the first ones to point at their negotiated contracts and demand that it is followed like the bible. Until of course, it doesnt benefit them to do so. Hey unions, when you renegotiate your contract, im pretty sure youll get family day. Or perhaps you can work like everyone else on rememberance day? |

| PS my only complaint about the day is the lame name. Maybe we should name it after someone deserving. And i mean DESERVING! No political correctness please! |

I actually found this quite funny. I was listening to the radio and it was all about the cons to the extra holiday and how much money it was going to cost everyone.
They were talking about how they hope their isn't a snowstorm that day as it's going to cost the city lots of money if they have to give holiday pay for all the streetcleaners and what not haha. |

of course it will cost money! But if we use that arguement then i guess we should work 365 days per year?

Just goes to prove my theory that you could have the cure for cancer and canadians would tell you every reason why it shouldnt be allowed! |

Yup. That was the first thing Dalton promised if he got re-elected...and he did.
The 3rd Monday of Every February is now "Family Day" and is a holiday for everyone but the police. |

its a new holiday starting in 2008, you didnt miss it ....yet :)
guvernment and other places will be happy about it so they can throw another big party.....

| the only complaint I can have with this holiday is when it is....if you are going to have a Family Day I think it should be in the summer when you are more likely to do something as a family. |

not everyone is actually going to get this day off, as Jay mentioned.
anyone in a union or federally regulated industry (like banking) has stat holidays covered under their collective bargaining agreements or already 'enjoys' more days off than most.
AFAIK, Family day is business as usual for anyone in the banking industry, for example...? |

As far as I know..the banks get it off.
I work for a Trade Association for the banks, and whatever days they get off, we get off, and we get Family Day off. |

for some of us this might not even make any real difference.
my work, and im sure that of a lot others, is working on removing a floater day to compensate for the new stat holiday here.
yay to net balance = nothing
