office 2k7's ribbon interface is what people who use it long enough rave about. why? they love having less to thumb through for basic stuff. less to figure out. its very intuitive. it adapts to the task at hand. right click on a picture, the picture stuff is immediately above the mouse cursor at easy reach. right click on text, a similar thing happens. task oriented is much quicker and faster for the end user. get used to it. thats the way things are moving.

Well, if you didn't want to thumb through the menus on older versions of word you could just create custom toolbars with whatever commands you used the most, arranged in whatever manner was most logical and intuitive to you.

The problem I have with the ribbon is just that: you can't customize it (well, at least not conveniently). It's great to have commands grouped in a logical way, but I already had that with custom toolbars. All the ribbon does is make it so the commands are arranged by Microsoft's logic rather than my own. So in that respect, I'd have to say it's a bit of a downgrade. It is a performance downgrade too, but not such a big one that I wouldn't want to use it because of that (and it's not nearly as bloated as open office.)

All that said, I'm certainly not one of those who think Office 2007 sucks. It has some solid additions to the interface that are clear upgrades over previous versions. It just has the same weakness that it seems like a lot of recent MS software has: fewer and/or less accessible options for customization compared with older versions.

i dont disagree that the ability to customize has gone down the ter...for users such as you and me, but for the general public, the biggest part of the userbase, productivity will go up. advanced users such as us are ones that dont like when the ability to customize is removed. i personally hate it. i am also able to realize that the target market isnt all of us geeks as that is a very small part of the market. most of the users of the office suite are pretty unskilled and dont know how to use word let alone excel effectively.

Agreed. :)

i see the office line of products as similar to the madden games. sure, there are some improvements here and there, but its still pretty much identical to the previous version so hard to give a about ;)

Advanced users who got deep in the guts of 2003 might feel a little sting from this new environment, but they're advanced users, so they should suck it up eventually.

Yeah, I can understand the divide between Office 2003 & 2007 users perfectly, but I'm certain that most of the stubborn 2003 users are just being sentimental.

Can't say I'm an advanced Office user, but I strongly prefer the newer intuitive layout that the new Office has. The modern look and feel appeal to me, and the old Office seems so boring now. I still keep 2003 for some reason, in the event that something really weird happens and I might need it. I have enough space.

Calibri rules. :toocool:

I like Office 2007, its basically the same as the rest of the editions, with a new toolbar. I didn't think the learning curve was all that high, it's pretty obvious what is on each tab IMHO. I still have office 2003 just in case :P But as more people switch to 07, the new DOCX format isn't going to open in Office 2003 (I believe). Also, OpenOffice is somewhat compatible with office, yet, sometimes stuff opens up weird in it. When you have reports to do, work to do, etc, better to use the business standard. If you're just going to write some papers here and there and print em out yourself, just stick with OpenOffice or the version you have.

Didn't mean to start an office program war, y'all must be bored at work...
