Canadian Grand Prix dropped

October 7, 2008 at 9:41 AM EDT

PARIS — The Canadian Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar.

FIA, the governing body of auto racing, has ratified its schedule for the coming season and left the Montreal race off the list.

The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been added to schedule in November while the Turkish Grand Prix has been slotted in for Montreal's traditional June date.

It's not the first time the Montreal race has fallen off the radar.

In 2003, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone announced the race had been dropped from the 2004 calendar because of an impending federal ban on tobacco advertising. But the race went ahead.

Canada has had a stop on the Formula One circuit since 1967. Montreal became the race's permanent home in 1978.

The move means there will be no F1 race in North America next year. The U.S. GP was dropped from the F1 schedule last season. There will be 18 races in 2009.

The FIA also announced Monday that its president Max Mosley had been given the authority to negotiate with the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) for the introduction of “radical measures to achieve a substantial reduction of costs in the championship from 2010”.

It said that failing agreement with the FOTA, the FIA would enforce necessary measures to achieve that goal.

The World Motor Sport Council also agreed to allow Formula One teams to equalize engine performance across the field for 2009, pending the introduction of cost-saving measures from 2010.

Marco Piccinini, the FIA deputy president for sport who represented the body at this year's Monaco Grand Prix after Mosley was caught in a sex scandal, will stand down a year ahead of time.

The FIA said a successor would be elected.

Mosley, who won a vote of confidence in April to stay in office, has said he will stand down in October next year when his term expires.

However he said last month that he was under heavy pressure from members to stay on.

heard that this morning.....I am a little surprised.

Abu Dhabi probably has a lot more hype going for it right now internationally than any Canadian city..

Yeah read that this morning as well

I can and can't believe it...

Im sure that these new tracks in asia are pumping in way more money than Canada was. But HOPEFULLY it will come back... Otherwise, looks like I'll have to do a trip to Italy.

malek
This extortion has to stop.

Ecclestone was bitching after 2003 and removed the GP for 2004 when the new anti-tobacco law was voted in... the mayor, promoter and PM begged him to change his mind, and it was back in 2004.

In 2006 again the same bull about outdated press room (how can you compete with the billionaires from the gulf?) and everything was upgraded this year to Ecclestone likings... and he promised the GP for 5 years till 2011!

Now again this year with all the bull so that the promoters and governments keep pumping more money in his pockets, this is crazy.

The Montreal GP is the most watched GP on the planet, it was the 3rd most watched overall sporting event last year, because its timing is perfect for Europe (its the evening over there)... I also think its the GP that sells the most tickets with over 200k tickets sold in a weekend.

What more does he want?

I hope you mean San Marino & Imola... b/c Monza is a bull processional race & easily the most boring one on the circuit.

As for the cancellation, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is still a drivers favourite, so it will be back. But that won't happen until there's a title sponsor, which there isn't right now, hence the cancellation.
