Radar Detectors??

So...what are some of your opinions on radar detectors?
Here in California I've been pulled over many times (about 13 in the last year or so, thank you red car) - although luckily I only have one speeding ticket to show for it. Fought one other ticket and won.
Yes, the obvious answer is to just not speed, but come on little things like 50 in a 40 etc..everyones does that! I've done quite a bit of research on this topic, but I'm still torn.
Those who have used them, do you find that they actually work? I know the 'Escort' detectors are pretty good, but I'm a bit skeptical if it will really do me any good at all. |

The most basic radar detectors will ultimately satisfy your needs, but obviously enough, they become more and more useful the more they go up in price.
That is, you get better radar range, more specific readings, and a wider array of more useful controls. Also of importance, better radar detectors are less likely to give you false readings.
For example: I have about a middle of the pack radar detector that I've been using since late last year. I live in CA too, so the three bands I get are K, X, and Ka. K and X bands are rarely emitted from police radar guns, and are usually just triggered from, say, automatic doors that happen to be in your range. Ka is really the one you need to worry about, but I get false Ka's ALL THE TIME. Now, I have no problem heeding the warning of the Ka, as I'd much rather slow down than risk the ticket, but I haven't seen a cop 90 percent of the time I pick up a Ka (or maybe they're just hidden).
Also, better detectors will tell you the direction the radar signal is coming from, which can be quite useful, I'd imagine. Most detectors have sensitivity settings, by which you can adjust it for highway or city modes of varying degrees.
If you don't have a mute button, your radar detector can be a most annoying device indeed, especially if it puts out a really cheap sounding alert noise (like mine). I have a mute button, but I don't think it quite mutes everything out, and is located on top of the detector (which you mount on your windshield). When it goes off, it goes off and WON'T SHUT UP!
Anyway, the unfortunate fact is that radar detectors are getting less and less useful now that cops are using that pulse emitter gun. Unlike a typical radar gun, this pulse gun (if it's called that) just emits one big burst that displays the speed of the targeted vehicle. So it's not just always 'on' like a radar gun, and even though most new one's can detect the pulse burst, you have very little reaction time before it's too late.
So if you're going to get one, try to shell out as much as you can for a quality one, as it will pay for itself in terms of the tickets you don't get (and yes, people have been saved by these things a-plenty.) |

"Yep...that's a radar."
"Nope...that's not a radar." |

Let me guess...
You drive some kind of Japanese car, perhaps a Honda or Toyota?
You have heaps of plastic bolted to the underside?
A dinner tray graces your boot to provide "downforce"?
Your number plate says "GT RUSH" or something equivalent?
Just guesses, let me know if I'm wrong. |

I think the real question here is: has he sucked more cocks than he's taken in the ass? |

| Any cop with a decent head on his shoulders would just keep the radar gun off until he sees a car going considerably faster then the others, then turn it on and clock the speed. Radar detector wouldn't pick that up. |

I was surprised to find a ton of cali cops leave theirs on. and they get a lotta people.
I had an escort passport for years and saved me a lot on my cali trips :) the valentine is the top of the line, if you wanna spend the money on it, it is very good.
and yes, nearly everyone, especially in cali, goes 50 in a 40....as long as its not a school zone! |

| They use laser radar here in Toronto almost 90% of the time. Any suggestions? I hear the new detectors pic up from a distance, but how good is that in the city when they're right around the block? |

I despise them. There's a very good reason why radars exist, and if you want to speed, at least make sure you're paying attention to what's happening around you.
Good thing they're illegal here in Brazil... |
