my initial thoughts exactly. but the one thing I've learned about the video game industry is that at times it can be virtually unpredictable. who the hell would've guessed nintendo would have made such a huge impact with the wii after such a lackluster performance from their previous console
soooooooo, lets just wait and see how things play ooot |
doesn't it seem like the lifespan of consoles are getting shorter and shorter? technology's progressing too quick for me i guess |

why are you all so excited?
the 80GBs are lame, and you're making the rumble controller sound like it's something that is more than a 'about ing time'' scenario.
$500 is still ing expensive for a system with no games (well 1 now) and a controller that's finally up to standard. (six axis is weak imo)
if i were you, i would get a 40 GB (much better on the inside) and upgrade the harddrive to a 160. (any laptop HDD will do).
sure there's no backwards compatibility, and only 2 USB ports, and no SD card support. but who honestly will gives a about any of that by the end of '08.

The lack of BC is a bummer for some, as it means keeping the PS2 or 1 if you want any chance in playing older titles. Some might opt to go with the 80 just for this reason.
Rumble has never been anything important to me in gaming, only maybe 2 or 3 games in the history of the industry have actually used the feature for anything more than loud vibrations whenever a gun is shot or an explosion happens. I'm sure theres more, but you get the point, rumble is almost pointless if you ask me, and in some cases just plain annoying.
I guess it really just comes down to value. Some people are excited because this is a PS3 with the largest HD out of all the bundles available, a game included, the DualShock 3 (a better controller than previous incarnations), and a Blu-Ray player, not to forget to mention like before, a PS2 and PS1 as well. Reminder that most Blu-Ray players cost about just as much, and yet all they can do is play movies. Considering all this you get, $500 isnt too bad. Obviously its a high number, but you dont hear people complaining about how costly Porsche's or Ferrari's are. If you think $500 is too much considering all the Sony has packed into this sucker, I dont think you should be buying anything of this nature as it is.
Obviously I'm not directing this comment at you, and clearly you are one that wants to buy the PS3 for its GAMING abilities. But I hate to ignore the fact that Sony has gone head and shoulders beyond the competitors in bringing all of this new technology to consumers for a low price CONSIDERING how new the tech is. A high-definition movie player with free online multiplayer and full backwards compatibility? Doesnt that just sound good to the ears? |

40 GB is a better deal. with a new motherboard, and less demand in power aka less heat (ps3s get hot).
and the HDD size isn't very important. if i was someone in the market for a ps3 (though, I am not), i would get a $20 GB on ebay, or EB and upgrade the harddrive whenever. 20 gbs have ps2 support, and also have 4 usb ports. |

Wait, is that what you meant by 40GB are "much better on the inside"? Did they change some stuff around? I did not know that...
I actually have a 20GB myself. Thing is, I bought it when IT was $500. Early adoption in videogameland sucks ass. Its good that the PS3 is so easily upgradeable from an HD perspective, 360 requires only 360 hard drives, and they are massively overpriced from what I hear. |

yah, if you look on the side of the ps3, there's a little cover on the bottom, you take that off and there's a blue screw, take that out and there's the HDD. any laptop hdd will work, and there's no tamper stickers, so you can always return it.
the 40GBs are actually smaller, by about 2 inches width. power is more stable and there's actually a new drive inside some of them.
the only reason why the 40 looks the same size is because they didn't shrink the power supply or the drive.
it also weighs less, but nobody cares about that other than the companies that ship them. |

As they say...live and learn. I thought the 40GB PS3 was the same only a different HD and removed BC so that consumers were forced to buy more PS3 games.
Anyways, I guess the value in these bundles comes from the person and their situation. If somebody still owns a PS2 and wants a PS3, definitely go with the 40GB and just upgrade (or like you suggested, find a used 20GB, which is probably the cheapest of them all) |

i'm actually gonna wait a couple of years until the ps3 is scaled down to a slim version, kind of like the transformation of the ps2 in 2004. i really hate really bulky consoles.
by then mgs4 will be $20. ff13 will have finally come out. ps network will be stable, and bluray movies will have come down to $20. and best of all, ps3 will have hit the magic mass market point of $200 |

40

80

like i said it's only 2 inches, but you can still tell that the slim is in the works. |
