REVIEW: After-hours at Dreamz Fridays

A far departure from their typical format, Dreamz is aiming to become the official after party for Liquified's Swerve Fridays at WetBar. I had the opportunity to DJ the soft-opening test run this past Friday and wanted to share my thoughts and opinions.

Atlanta has been lacking an after-hours house scene for quite some time. With liquor laws essentially requiring all venues in Fulton county to close at 3 AM, there's only so much that our downtown and midtown clubs can do. Located in the former Dekalb Events Center, Dreamz is able to serve alcohol until 6 AM, making it a natural choice to fill the void.

Upon arriving, I think my reaction was pretty similar to other folks in the crowd -- confusion. As if spelling Dreamz with a "z" wasn't indication enough, a quick look at the venue's web site (www.dreamzatl.com) will quickly tell you that they have consistently targeted one specific crowd in the past. But, that's pretty typical for a soft opening for a new event that hasn't really been advertised much yet.

The sound system had more than enough power, but you can tell that the place is set up for live hip-hop concerts -- the bass was overbearing and the frequency on the subs was at an awkward setting. I spoke to folks about that and they're going to have a professional sound technician come take a look at everything. Being that the place is set up for live bands, it was particularly challenging as a DJ. In place of ear-level monitors, there were floor monitors, causing a slight delay and an echo off the back wall. With little fine-tuning and a professional DJ booth though, this place an be easily modified to support some great DJ-based events. But, hey, that's soft openings are for. The place does have some distinct advantages. In addition to simply being able to support after-hours parties, there is a pretty high capacity:

A little bit of advertising will allow the crowd to know what to expect and draw more fans of the music being played. So, if you want to go somewhere besides Waffle House on Fridays after WetBar, I recommend checking this place out once or twice. Beginning next week, Brett Mauro and I will be spinning there regularly along with periodic guest DJ's. House music is scheduled to start around 2:30 and continue to close. I'm going to work on trying to get a guest list for TA's, so if you want to check this thing out, PM me with your full name and the names of the folks in your group. (They are not going to allow "pluses" on guest lists because they say that can bring in the wrong crowd.)

I'm not sure how long I can personally sustain a regular after-hours schedule after working all day, but I am nevertheless looking forward to this. I've been waiting a long time for a good after-hours scene. I hope to see some of you guys come and check this out because hearing feedback is what will help the promoters cater to the EDM crowd. There is definitely potential for good things to come.

Dude, sick. :D

I appreciate your enthusiasm. I'm going to need transportation since I don't have a car, but I'd love to go to some of these definitely! Congrats on the bill spot. :)

Thanks Sam! I'm going to try to hang out at the Swerve events before heading over to Dreamz. If I can make it out, I'd be glad to give you a ride. Where abouts do you live?

Any idea if this is the same gig VIPNightlife is promoting?

Good luck...Hope this works out. Just remember you have the Red Door, Beyond, and the Ice Gallery to compete with. I will come check it out but be aware that those other 3 afterhours places have been going for a long time and may steal some of the crowd. Especially Red Door as it is right down the street and they hand out flyers in front of the Wet Bar after every show.

Yeah, I'm no promoter. I'll leave that to the professionals. Any idea if places like Red Door serve alcohol past 3 AM?

They do. It's one of those BYOB type deals. I don't think they have the ability to serve normal drinks though, like beer and all kinds of mixed drinks. Usually the stuff is really limited.

There is a really good after-hours here in smyrna. It is run by some colombians (i presume it still is) and there is nothing wrong with it. The sound is good, the people are top quality and so are the chooneg. Drinks all day till the music stops which is very late. Only problem is that it opens at 4am lol.

I like BYOB places. Nothing like walking in with two 12-packs to let everyone know you're ready to party.
