| The "pulse" of the people is a move towards legal music downloads. iTunes is now the 2nd largest music store (by sales) on the planet behind Wal-Mart. Beatport is almost completely ubiquitous in the dance music world. There's no going back--it's better this way. |

Now just imagine if digital downloads had reasonable prices. |

I buy CDs for around 8-9 dollars, which gets me 10-12 tracks, that's less than a dollar per track. Mp3s are 99 cents at least, and up to 2.50$ for certain releases on beatport and such. Why should I pay more than twice the money for a file that's been compressed to a lower quality, especially when that file has no production costs? |

Well considering i went CD shopping yesterday in the same place that you live and did not see one EDM comp under 20$ i ask where do you buy these Cd's at half the price? If you say second hand your point is moot.
Ps. Not every track is on a cd comp. You just limit yourself for those? Nothing has really changed except the medium because in the past if you couldn't get on cd you had to get the record. More expensive...yet no one stole records everyday.
pps...the artist's time is a production cost. Not all tracks take 5 minutes.
If you knew all the work and how much time it took to release on a reputable label even digitally...you might begin to understand. |

1 - I listen to more than EDM
2 - all EDM 'compilations' are
3 - on amazon ;)
EDM is different, because tracks are meant to be purchased individually. But this applies for everything else I buy. I just bought a big batch faily recently and there wasn't a single item under 12 dollars.
Take santana's abraxas for example.
Buying the CD is 9 dollars. Buying all the tracks on the cd in mp3 format is 12 dollars. How do they justify the price increase when the quality is inferior and the production costs of the CD itself should be substracted? |

Well it is an edm board so i based my argument on this. (I also listen to other things).
Lets say you only want one track. Do you pay the 9$ or the .99 cents? If you look at pretty much any product, the more you buy the less you pay. They want you to buy the CD, mp3's dont take up shelf space and warehouse space. If you only want a few tracks they want this option to be available too. Its a business Project, and one that isn't very profitable anymore compared to the past. (This is completely the fault of execs for refusing to adapt to a changing market, but the reality is it remains a business and companies should be allowed to operate to make money)
Bands still NEED to put out CD's to be accessible to everyone (even if they make much less on them), yet the most popular format now is mp3. Its very similar to the days when CD grabbed the top spot, and labels still made tapes to be able to sell to those without CD players. Its an incentive based method to get rid of a product they would rather not produce but need to.
God im hungover, don't argue:p |
