| Give the men a small concession on their fee? That way it would be totally fair, because they would not be paying for a service/facility they do not have access to. |

It's just stupid for you to say that they are being given preferential treatment based on the color of their skin. That's not what is happening at all.
I think Harvard could have appeased them without such an uproar by offering different times or locations for the women to work out. Less of an inconvenience, same result for the women. |
just want to make sure that i never said the treatment was given due to the colour of their skin..has nothing to do with that...
Ah well...life is life... |

I think this is "discrimination" in principle.
Yes, this gives a chance for Muslim women to exercise comfortably and there is nothing wrong with that.
But in principle, the gym is closed to all men. Yes you can say it's open to all women, not just Muslim women. Fact is thought that this trial is being done to specifically accomodate Muslim women. All women are not being specifically accomodated here, only Muslim women.
The linked article has a Muslim woman that mentions "we must show tolerance and respect for all others". I agree with that, but it works both ways. Yes, I see nothing wrong with showing some tolerance and respect for Muslim women, but at the same time, it goes the other way too. Muslim women should show respect and tolerance for other cultures and religions.
Giving preferential or specific accomodation to Muslim women puts things on a slippery slope. What about all the other cultures or religious groups that request specific accomodation for various reasons? Will they be given the accomodation as well, or will this be only for Muslim women? How far can this potentially go? Will every religious or minority group at Harvard have preferential or specific accomodation?
As I mentioned, showing tolerance and respect for all others works both ways. Certain minority and religion groups must understand that while the US is a free country in many ways, they have to also be tolerant and respectful of the majority of people in the US. It's a bit naive and unrealistic for a minority group living away from their home country and culture to expect preferential treatment or accomodation. Same applies to Canada.
In simpler terms, (as an example) Muslim women living in North America and away from their home country should not expect the society to fully accomodate them. They're living in another country, so it's only fair that they respect and live by the rules and standards of that society set by the majority.
Looking at the other side of the coin, if the average American were to go live in Saudi Arabia, they should not expect their Western way of life to be fully accomodated. A North American living in Saudi Arabia will have to respect and abide by certain rules and standards of that society. |

Although Harvard's catering towards Muslim women only might have a little too much to do with the whole politically correct movement, it really isn't that big a deal.
For example here at U of T (St. George campus) one of the two main athletic centers have women-only weight room hours.
Sure it sucks getting kicked out mid-workout but then you can just go to the other gym that's a block away. |

well that sucks...
that's the best part about being part of a University gym!
I know my gym at my University campus was associated with a private gym, so anyone who could pay for it could be a member...
I'm sure all the old men were in heaven working out at that gym! |

Religion does not just refer to the color of someone's skin. In fact, it's not related at all.
What an ignorant comment. |
no matter how you look at it....its discrimination.
Its only 6 hours of the 70 hours the gyms are open...well that is ust great....so lets divide up the other 64 hours to all other minority groups....that way everyone is happy....everyone will get their 10 second work out.
I have no problem with giving them time when they can work out by themselves but instead of taking away from every male that uses the gym how about adding an additional 6 hours to when the gym is open and charge them extra for the use during those times. |

| I'd like to hear from the women that go to gyms to meet men as much as working out. There are plenty that do, I've met some single moms and newly divorcées in mine, and it's kinda obvious they're there for more than a workout. They've been ripped off too. |

For the people saying this is discrimination, how do you feel about women's only gyms?
York already has one, and there are plenty set up around town. |

Yes, and many have been sued or human rights complaints set against them, and many settled out of court.
It's sex discrimination any way you look at it. What women have strived and worked so hard for, to set in law, now says it's ok under courtesy... dilutes the law of equal rights for everyone. |

ermmm its called majority rule. If you cant fit, find a place that fits you. Dont make the world revolve around you. |
that's right
honestly, I'm so tired of reading and hearing this crap
first Christmas trees, now this
honestly, get over yourselves and embrace the rules and regulations of the country that has given you its citizenship with respect and understanding
why couldn't they just start they own recreational room for religious ladies? why are we expected to understand and respect THAT while they suddenly think they're all that and can go on disrespecting our rules and views?

Its not a time for only Muslim women... ALL women are able to attend. |
but none of the non-muslim women had problem with having a co-ed gym
because who the hell goes to gym to worry about having men there? you go to work out and mind your own business! |

I am againt women's only gyms....that being said.....if the gym from day one is a women only gym I have less issue with it as it is a private membership. In this case memberships are open to people that meet certain requirements (assuming you have to be a student at the school) and now people that meet the membership requirements are not allowed to use the gym.
I remember years ago the uproar their was because of a very exclusive golf club in Mississauga where all members were male and no female members were allowed....but they did allow women to play the course if accompanied by a member. |
