granted, i don't know the clubs' budgets in MTL however i do know what steve told me himself about bookings and payments in MTL...need i bring that up yet AGAIN louis?
anyways...i'm just saying i like steve better at an afterhours than any 10pm-3am club, period. but if getting him at tribe is all i can get, then, i guess i have no choice but to be thankful for that cuz if tribe wouldn't be the ones bringing him back, i'd have no Steve whatsoever and then i'd become very depressed and develop groupie-like tendencies and follow him EVERYwhere :p
...
and to all you TO people: if you read my post correctly, you'd have noticed that i said: "it SEEMS all TO party ppl care about is..." I said it SEEMS; not that it's fact...although judging from every TO person i meet, it is indeed the case. maybe i'm meeting the crackers, i dunno. and if some of my closest friends' consistent opinions about their experiences partying in TO isn't enough for you to have justification...well, too bad! it's certainly enough for me.
a few youtube videos? my goodness...there are thousands that clearly depict what i was trying to describe...and yeah i know drugs go down in every city...MTL isn't an exception. there isn't one night i go to stereo and vent out to maher on how disgusted i am with EVERYone gnawing off their faces...it's really dirty and i usually end up leaving these days because of it...unfortunately it's not something that can be controlled so it's left alone...
the sasha and digweed party...well, that party was THE BIGGEST event of 2007 in MTL so basing your opinion on that one night will for sure generate drug-induced observations such as those mentionned: the airplane (wtf is that anyway seriously? lol TO slang hehehe jkjkjk :p) and the vicks...well that happens at every afterhours/massive event i've been to. hell, i was high too! anyone in their right mind should have been high or intoxicated in some way lol, it was ing epic!
anyways, fine, i am being harsh with my opinions for someone who hasn't properly partied in TO however, they are based on SOMEthing so don't bash me out completely...
look when it comes down to it, i'm just insanely jealous that you TO peeps are getting lawler's release party ANNNNNNNNNNND a freaking compilation named after your city...so i'll go cry in my MTL corner now :p |

wrong as in incorrect indeed
any club could pay for lawler
has nothing to do with money
its first, the agents policies and all the bullsh*t of prices in this city
second, is it worth it bringing steve lawler to your club or afterhour ?
nobody in montreal wants to pay to get in
how many times did you have to pay at tribe ?
i'd like to see lawler at a bigger event... with no trance before or after
some event that makes sense musically
ex: tribe's S&D party
thats where he belongs
or maybe piknik (howells too by the way) |

I like that you stand for what you believe in, and came back with a well thought out response and more clarification.
Too bad you had school and couldn't swing in for this Day/Night event. I know your opinions would change.
One day you can make it and meet some of us "non- crackers"...lol...cuz there really are a lot of us... :p |

i guess in terms of prices, we're getting different info. fair enough. you work in this industry, have worked in it for years so i'll give you the benefit of the doubt but it's hard to ignore what an artist himself has said on the topic nonetheless...
i THINK lawler still has pull in the city so ya, i'd bet he'd pull a proper (at least) 500 people at a bare minimum to stereo. and 500 people at stereo is nice. as for piknik, i think his sound just won't work that well for some reason...maybe an igloofest, actually definitely an igloofest...hint hint...;)
i've never paid to go to tribe, granted. however, i will say this: i would have GLADLY paid to attend CERTAIN bookings at tribe (ie: lawler, fanciulli, sasha, digweed, warren, zabiela, etc). dude, you know me. i don't care if i have to pay a mere 20-30 bucks to see THAT kind of talent. i said it b4 ill say it again: when the talent's there, that is to say: when the booking accommodates my personal tastes, i will pay if i have to!
nobody in montreal wants to pay to get into clubs anymore...this is true but is it the public's fault? i highly doubt it...here's my reasoning: clubs like tribe and opera have the money to allow hundreds of people walk into the club for free. they don't make their money off of the cover sales...my guess is the profit is off the bar sales + other illegal unmentionable activities...as with ANY club, there's always dirty business. i think it's the major 10pm-3am clubs like tribe and opera that have somewhat spolied MTL's party population by giving these free guestlists ALL THE TIME, not just on occasion. no wonder everyone wants to get in for free...we're used to it now ;)
one thing i didn't quite understand: when you said agents' policies, did you mean the artists' agents and their relationships/contracts with the club(s) and how these contracts must be maintained or else all hell will break loose and the club will lose the artist completely?
and what did you mean by the bull prices in this city? as in, artists that come here ask for too much or...? jsuis perdu un peu la-dessus hehe :p
+1 for howells at piknik tho...i say desyn vs danny all day ;) |

I think indeed putting Lawler between Vibe and a hard-trance act was a mistake.
Vibe was playing very hard, 2004, non-stop drums, kind of fast too.
Lawler never plays over 125-126 maybe 127. He can be totally amazing, I witnessed the magic live 3 times. But you can't judge what he does with the Resolution performance. He didn't have a proper transition. He was like a fish out of the water.
in terms of prices, I know that last time at Stereo was considered a low attendance. |

very true, and yet when he did play his style at resolution, everybody hated him for some reason...maybe cause of the difference in transition from Vibe, who knows, i personally loved him and can't wait to see him again
think everyone has a point too, that he would be amazing in an afterhours or an event like S&D.....but can't see him at Stereo, don't think they would have the cash for him personally...esp when they can't get the AC right in that place! :p
(hope to stand corrected) |

its always funny to read that a dj bad performance is because of the djs who played before him or worse after.
Opera and Tribe didn't start the free entrance, other places were doing it way before, sona/aria/stereo just to name a few. |

i didn't go see steve at reso 08 this year...i fell asleep lol :( but the way he was slotted in was kinda raunchy to say the least...he just didn't fit. but yeah, a bad performance shouldn't be because of the djs who played b4 or after...assume caliss!!! :p
as for the whole free entrance thingy...i wasn't saying tribe and opera started it; i meant they are the main big 10pm-3am clubs doing it now.

Meh
Wont get into this here... but bookings are kinda too often in the wrong venue... at a wrong time and not well promoted
Kinda sucks
I prefer less internationnal but at the right place and right time... than bringing all the big guns... make em play with other internationnals without any musical structure and book em 3 times a year
Wait a bit... im working on some stuff
New flavours, new faces... lower prices at the door
That's what i think the scene needs
It can be house / trance / tech whatever
We just need new stuff at the right time and right place
By the way... im very happy lawler plays at tribe... last 3 times i saw him... he in killed it |

You are kidding right? The way a schedule is built, and how the Dj plays before you as EVERYTHING to do with your performance.
If the DJ before you plays at his hardest, tribal, 130 bpm and you play minimal tech at 125... and the guy after you plays hard trance at 135... there's absolutely no room to make any sort of build up in your set, you just start with the fastest hardest stuff you have, which results into a mindless night of pounding beats with no story. Or you start from scratch and everybody thinks you are boring.
This is why Lawler is at his best on long 6 hrs set. He just works, and works his way with patience. Releasing that beast 3-4 hrs into the set. |
