Need advice from MWTA producers.

Since my old computer crashed I've lost pretty much any ability I had to produce, which is frustrating in particular right now because I've got a serious itch to start doing some production work.
I've decided to invest some money in getting my new computer set up properly, and in particular really just want to hear about the process some of you all go about producing.
I know Blake and Mathias are both "Ableton 4 Lyfe!" guys, and truth be told it's the software I'm most familiar with too - but I also really struggle with writing MIDI's in Ableton for some reason, maybe just that it seems like a frustrating affair for one reason or another.
So, if some of you wouldn't mind sharing your own set up's and a bit about how you go about doing what you do, I'd really appreciate it. I figure I can obviously go and "read reviews" about any and all of this stuff, but to be honest I think I would be best served by just kind of hearing about what you all think you might do again, or do differently, as far as production goes.
Thanks in advance :) |

Ableton 4 Lyfe.
I usually start in session mode to brainstorm b/c its so easy to write in midi and alternate different clips. Then jump into arrangement when the main idea is there and ready to sequence. |

When elevation stayed at my place the other week he went in and showed me how to do some midi writing. I have just been using operator right now since I don’t have any other instruments to use. I personally can’t seem to get the sounds I want out of it but I could maybe show you a few things. I really don’t know how much more knowledge in that department I would have over you but your more than welcome to come do a sit down and we can rave out.
I have never used session mode to write it so that might be something we could both learn to use. |

| I'm not quite sure what you're even trying to do to be honest, do you mean arranging? Sequencing perhaps? |

Writing MIDI files for use with VST's. What else would you call that?
"Creating" MIDI files?

So basically any time anyone composes anything on any single instrument, you'd call it sequencing?
It basically seems like you're saying people don't ever "write" music - they "sequence" it, which sounds pretty laughable to me.

Placing notes in MIDI, "Writing MIDI", is writing the gestural notation for a specific track in the mix.
Sequencing is the process of arranging your track and its elements. |

| No. When someone is sequencing, I'd call it sequencing. |
