The economic downturn will result in even big corporations like Walmar laying off workers...or raising prices. Bad news for consumers as well as employees.

Yeah I agree. Rising food prices are occuring in a lot of other countries, but the sad part is people in Canada are just bending over and taking the punishment. When wheat prices went up in Italy last year, there were country-wide protests and riots. Prices go up in Canada, and people's reaction is just a collective "meh". If there is civil unrest, then the goverment and politicians are forced to listen to people.

Dude..go back to your communist country...

A rise in Price Level is inevitable...so suck it up...If there wasn't an increase in the price level then there is something definitely wrong with the economy.

Or if you're Wal-Marty just pay them less than minimum wage and everything works out!

I totally agree

I think it, in large part, is also meant to quiet the grumbling around the recently jacked-up food prices.

Basic things like butter, tomatoes, milk, eggs ... I can't even make omlettes anymore without feeling the damage to my chequing account hahahahaha jks

honestly though... if you compared a grocery receipt from even 5 years ago to one from today... the changes are vast

in canada, we get robbed for many simple things....like milk. Its half price right across the border!

Damn min wage increase, that means it will cost $10 to get a friggin wendys burger. Replace them with robots :p

...that's an entire different issue right there...
TO guy
Employment levels are at their lowest in recent history right now. This is a move to cool off our economy before it explodes - so we don't end up like China in about 5 years.
