good.

companies who need to cut workers due to minimum wage increasing are milking the workforce as it is, and if it's too rough for them then i'll happily cry them a river while they gtfo of the country and go do business in the third world where such checks n balances don't exist.

[edit: admittedly it is going to be painful without fixes to international trade standards and better employment standards in the countries we trade with... global economics  ]

Huh? You missed my point. I'm not complaining about the rising food prices. I know it's a fact of life and I simply deal with it and adapt to it. My point was a much bigger issue, that people in Canada have a "herd mentality" and are willing to put up, or accept whatever is thrown at them.

A rise in Price Level is inevitable...so suck it up...If there wasn't an increase in the price level then there is something definitely wrong with the economy.

Yeah, because Russia is currently a communist country .

Like Yohan, you missed my point. It wasn't about food prices, but the general mentality of people in Canada.

aside from the ethical side minimum wage increase at best can only be positive in that they can make the government look better. The governments try to set ineffective min wage (around the equilibrium) so it does not have much disruptive effect on the economy. In case the min wage does work and is set above the equilibrium (which may be in this case) it works as a price floor and thus decreases the demand and increases the supply of labor. This increases unemployment. Basic economics. Higher minimum wage = deadweight loss for the ecomony and increased unemployment = bad thing for canadian society

Since the first minimum wage increases, prices at mcdonalds etc have risen big time. For example just before the wage rose from 6.85 to 7.50 in 2004 a mcdonalds combo was $3.99. Now it's 5.89. Ive seen the same at many other places that employ minimum wage workers. Funny but my wage (much higher than minimum wage) has only adjusted slightly to reflect inflation. That means that people like me are paying more as reflected in actual income. But hold on all you socialists that think this is a good thing.....

Everyone here loses. Lower income people are less likely to be hired. Lower income people who also tend to rely on stores where lower income people are hired dont win because they too have to pay the substantially higher prices at places like walmart, grocery stores, and mcdonalds. As a business owner myself, I will be less likely to hire two employees and instead hire one while looking for ways to be more efficient.

The solution is to bump up minimum wage yearly to reflect inflation. Anything more than that s very economically damaging, especially to those that these methods try to help. But hey, what do the liberals care? From what i see in yesterdays budget they are no different than the feds in the chretien days.

What? The economy is failing? Dont worry, be happy! We arent going to do a thing about it!

BTW those who applaud the minimum wage increases are probably the same people who whine about american prices being lower than ours. Well now you have a large part of your answer sitting right in front of you. Think about it.

LOL

What's this crying about 0.75 c/hour increase? OMG TEH BUSINESS FAIL!!! TOTA ALL PANIC! CANADA FOR TEH LOOOOSE! ZOMG!!!!!!!!!11one

0.75c increase from 7.75$ is a 10% increase, and it looks big. However consider the years in which the wage was not increased!
1990 - start of stats: $5.00
year inflt m-wage increase % on min wage
1991 3.79% $5.40 8.0%
1992 2.13% $6.00 11.1%
1993 1.69% $6.35 5.8%
1994 0.20% $6.70 5.5%
1995 1.75% $6.85 2.2%
1996 2.20% $6.85 0%
1997 0.75% $6.85 0%
1998 1.02% $6.85 0%
1999 2.58% $6.85 0%
2000 3.23% $6.85 0%
2001 0.70% $6.85 0%
2002 3.88% $6.85 0%
2003 1.99% $6.85 0%
2004 2.12% (20%*) $7.15 4.4%
2005 2.15% $7.45 4.2%
2006 1.64% $7.75 4.0%

So, for the last 17 years, we have had an increase of about 50% in min wage. Inflation _seems_ to have been lower - but that's BS.

You telling me that the cost of living between 1990 and 2008 has not gone up 50%?? Effin A it hasn't. In fact, gas prices are about double the cost in 1990! Food - way more expensive. Housing? Don't even start. Entertainment? Who the f has heard of drinks costing $10 at a bar in 1990? Movies, car insurance, everything else has gone up in price like crazy.

On that note, I _am_ pro-business. I agree that the perfect market should determine the perfect wage. We are not in a perfect market. The market needs oversight, and sometimes help. Deal with it.

For those that say go back to the communist country - this is exactly what happens when you let the standard of living deteriorate for the poor. Some idiot will come along, promise super-high minimum wage, the poor will rise up for him, friggin create a revolution or elect a lunatic... No no no, keep the min wage people happy and working away at Mickey's and in restaurants. The rich people need to have their insurance against a bad Prime Minister or a revolution. So my solution to the problem - become wealthy (eventually;) ) and don't worry about pesky min wage laws.

As I mentioned, these minimum wage increases are nothing more than a gimmick used by politicians like the GST decrease.

The problem is even with these increases, minimum wage over the past 15 years has NOT kept up with inflation, so you still end up with a lose-lose situation. Life for poor people does not get easier, and on top of that the wage increases make it harder to get hired for jobs.
