For those who don't know the minimum wage is going up on March 31st. Server wage going to $7.60 and general minimum going to $8.75. So for students and others that don't have the jobs they want yet this is good news.

And those people who actually need the money and for who the raise was intended for (ie. Single mothers etc.) to become unemployed.

Over the past few years we saw the minimum wage go up for the first time in over 10 years. Inflation from the mid 90s to several years ago had risen much more than that. These minimum wage raises up to 2010 barely keep up with inflation.
Unfortunately, as others have stated prices will rise, companies will hire less workers and it will likely be harder to get a job. Overall the situation for most people won't change. You're also likely to see companies reducing bonuses or expecting workers to work more hours.
The minimum wage increase is nothing more than a gimmick that politicians have used to fool voters, just like the GST decrease. |

I totally agree
I think it, in large part, is also meant to quiet the grumbling around the recently jacked-up food prices.
Basic things like butter, tomatoes, milk, eggs ... I can't even make omlettes anymore without feeling the damage to my chequing account hahahahaha jks
honestly though... if you compared a grocery receipt from even 5 years ago to one from today... the changes are vast |

Yeah I agree. Rising food prices are occuring in a lot of other countries, but the sad part is people in Canada are just bending over and taking the punishment. When wheat prices went up in Italy last year, there were country-wide protests and riots. Prices go up in Canada, and people's reaction is just a collective "meh". If there is civil unrest, then the goverment and politicians are forced to listen to people. |

| Sucks for small business. The good thing is that it makes walmart type companies pay there lower level workers better. |
