Museum Station Unveiled (pg. 3)

the totem poles and egyptian designs look kinda tacky.. but i like the ionic columns, perhaps that same design woulda looked better on all the columns..

anyways, apparently more than 50% of the cost was privately funded through grants and donations, and the TTC/city picked up the tab on the rest..

quote:

"The concept is to connect the cultural reality above ground with the station below ground," says Rahul Bhardwaj, president and CEO of the Toronto Community Foundation, which contributed $2 million to the Museum station redesign. (The province put in $2 million and the Toronto Transit Commission, the final million.)

i agree that the money could've been better spent on improving service, which at this point is far more critical than the aesthetics of a single station.. tho in all fairness, the private money received went specifically to this project, not sure that the same sponsors would have fronted the money for just service improvements..

anyways, there's a good article in the Star about it here:

nice!!! i think all of them should have some sort of theme pertaining to maybe the history of that certain area.! would be cool:) and a lot cheaper then totally renovating the stations to look like the sheppard line ones

and my god. of course everyone complains.. ... go to school people if you dont like it become politicians.. you obviously know a lot more about it then they do!

That's the thing. The sponsors would not have fronted the rest of the bill had it gone straight to the TTC, as they know it would have been 'wasted'.

The truth is, it may not be the most accessible, or busy station, but at least it is a step in the right direction. Toronto needs more art, more things or attractions in the city, to bring us together. Walking around you get a very disjointed feel from this city.

Toronto needs its citizens to feel proud about where they live, and making the city more 'beautiful' will help get the ball rolling.

First of all, an announcement: Barb is quickly becoming one of my favourite people here. :D

As for the station, I like it. I'll accept the cost of doing it. Frankly, it's nice to see the TTC abandon the practice of slapping band-aids on everything. A total refit, especially at a station that while less used, certainly has a connection to the experience of the ROM and all the culture that goes with it. It's something to talk about, to keep interest in transit.

Besides, it'll take a lot more than $2M to fix the ails of the TTC.

IMO, well done. Let's hope nobody spoils it.

Oh, and aussieGQ...WTF, dude?

It's not about you. It's not about Torontonians in general. It's about dressing it up for the tourists and such that go to the ROM as an attraction. As soon as you get off the train, you begin your experience.

Although I agree with Orko (he's a smart dude) that beautification goes a long way to civic pride.

speaking of fixing, they really need to oil those wheels! every time the train makes slight turns (St. Clair station) or full-on turns (Spadina-St. George and Union) the squealing is unbearable
