I dunno how I feel about that one. On the one hand, it recreates the atmosphere of the book masterfully. But at the same time, the movie flies by so fast that it really misses, or even omits, the main themes of the book.

Anyone see the 1972 version of Solaris? Frickin sweet - even better atmosphere than the George Clooney version, I think. I have yet to read the book, though, it's on my list.
edit: whoops, missed page 5 - yeah, I really, really want to see Stalker, I've heard nothing but good things about it. |

Meh. It's a nice conversation piece and certainly inspired loads of subsequent films, but it's hardly worthy of being considered the "best" at anything other than being influential.
Acknowledging somethings influence and gaging its overall quality are two entirely different things.

You're completely wrong.
First of all, a movie can't be judged outside of its "historical" context. It's not purely about influence, more about in what way a movie has enriched filmmaking, culture and society.
Apart from being wrong about that, you're also wrong about Metropolis being an inferior movie. The visuals, the production, and the twisted plot all form an exhilarating and grasping work. It may have a different appeal than modern SF films (understandably in that very genre), but in my eyes it ranks among the greatest of all time. |

First of all, matters of opinion are not something anyone can be wrong or right about, and further, your declaration about how movies can and cannot be interpreted is also entirely subjective.
Nice try though, seriously. I'm sure if you keep at it long enough someday you'll sound as intelligent as you once again have tried (and failed) to. |

No. It's simply the way art works.

Why don't you just add that statement to your signature, as you seem to post it in every reply. I don't know if you're trying to sound patronising or if it's just provocation. Why you feel the need to go down to that level is beyond me, but feel free to continue. I still firmly believe this kind of thing makes the attacker look worse than the person attacked, even on teh intarweb. |

:haha:
You are a sad, pathetic creature if you really believe that.

No, the reason you see it so often is because you make an absolute arse of yourself as often as you do. You make claims that are absurd, and genuinely try very, very hard to come off as if you understand things you clearly don't.
It has nothing to do with "who looks better or worse", and has everything to do with the things you say in the posts you make. Nothing more, nothing less.
:)
Edit: And if you need any "evidence" of the above claims, may I suggest you "scroll up" and read your own replies to this very thread?
That should serve quite well. |

He made no assertion as to his personal interpretation of the film itself, merely stated that it was significant towards the genre given many of the variables any sort of academic level critique would yield: historical context, genre influence and above all - film content, direction, utilization of artistic themes in a universal sense as well as obvious milestone placement in western cinema far removed from pop culture. Not to say that Metropolis isn't considered a component of popular culture - it's just that it is a lot more than that. And that isn't an opinion at all. |

Which has to do with its influence, and not whether or not an individual thinks it's one of the "best" science fiction films of all time or not.
In summary, he made a bunch of statements calling "opinion" wrong, and therefore he is a complete twat.

No, it's just a game Halcyon feels like playing every once in a while when he's feeling frisky - nothing personal.
And unfortunately, he just happened to pick the dumbest horse he could possibly have bet on this time.
Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you.

Why the hell would a bar eat you?:conf:
