Well in that case yea, the odds of remaking a classic into something better are near impossible. (Though I'm not ruling out that it COULD be done.) |

I saw this the other day:
Mark Knight & Funkagenda - The Man With the Red Face
I just about threw up and I haven't even heard it.
As for remaking classics -- as long as it's good, warranted, can bring something new to the table, and isn't purely for money garnishing, then yes, I like remakes of classics. |

Agreed. I'm not against the idea of remaking old tracks, it's just that 99.99% of the time remakes are absolute . |

I know! I nearly swerved off the road when i heard it on kiss!
The Original still sounds as fresh today as its always been.
Such an amazing tune.
I dont mind hearing remakes, or new mixes of older tracks that had gone un-noticed back in the the day. The sort of tunes that just got thrown on the pile and forgotten.
eg Discodroids - Interspace (Oliver Shine Remix) I thought this was a good update of an old Corsten track.
Heaven Scent was remixed by Greg Downey. That was a forgettable remix. Thats the sort of tune that should be left well alone!!!! |

| The Man With The Red Face remix was played at my local meatmarket the other night in a set that also included Rhianna and Snap. I never thought in a million years Garnier's work would reach that far, even if it is through a butchered remix. |

| on a positive note, the San & Sebastian remix of Carte Blanche is actually good. Add that to the Muskat Nuss remix of greece 2000 & that's 2 good remakes in the last 3 years, out of how many attempts ;) |

I don't want to defend these remixers, but can we clear up what we want to bitch about?
butchering the remix would imply adding or subtracting too many parts and raping what was good about the original... yet most of these remakes coming through this year are more updates than straight up remixes.... i'd hardly call that butchering when they're only adding their soundbank backing beats and leaving the melody intact.
Hale Bopp (Leger Mix) = good
Dreams (Leger Mix) = good
Jaguar = not so good
But having said that guys like Ryan Davis and a few other tech-house producers are using older trance melodies to good use in my opinion. Maybe because the tracks they're picking to use were less mainstream than the examples already in this thread? |
