In the end for me, the formula is much less important than the actual content and overall feeling. Formulaic can be great imo.

Yes, it can - but it's a fine line between doing things right and laziness.

So while you could find yourself really liking certain producers formulas, there almost always seems to come a point where I'd like to see something different from guys I've followed a while, and when that doesn't happen with artists I see potential in, or have enjoyed for a while, it's definitely a disappointing experience.

I guess it's the musicians who are capable of thriving without relying entirely on a formulaic approach to the music they make who I really think have staying power. This doesn't mean I don't have loads of cookie cutter techno and tech house in my CD book, but those don't tend to stick around for all together too long.

Does it really happen that often though? I don't necessarily read a whole lot of threads in MD, but I don't notice anyone necessarily being "blind" to artists' formulas they like. What I tend to see more of, or at least interpret it as, is just people discussing a formula they don't like.

I don't know - I feel like I see some variation of:

Another generic _______ tune that's just like ______ and all the rest of the stuff he's done. Total .

...pops up pretty often throughout TA. Like a few dozen times a day. :wtf:

True.

only those are able to create trends and stay on top.

and i guess everyone needs fillers for the cd book, dont we ?

Oh I agree with that, I'm talking more on the blindness. Are there more threads/posts of artists getting praise for their formulaic tracks, or more threads/posts of artists getting slammed for their formulaic tracks? I definitely see more negative than positive.

ps
I thought I totally had a point at some time during this, I don't think I do anymore :p

How does hanging out with him, several times mind you, and various conversations not equate to knowing someone?

i mean know someone as in what they do to get their music exposed. i hung out with him too, at bed. he's a nice guy and doesn't hold too high of an opinion of himself, but that has nothing to do with how contracts are negotiated. and what you told me just explains rjt or clovis's, whoever it was, their attitude of making it a mission to prove me wrong, when there is no wrong or right its all speculation.

I don't think it weighs heavily in one direction or the other - it's just strange to me to see it come up as often as it does, and to realize that I myself had used kind of similar arguments against tunes without thinking what I was actually saying.

And I'm telling you it's not ing speculation mate. Matt isn't some punk kid that came out of the woodwork with Reason and a Yamaha keyboard his mom got him for Christmas. Do you want to know what he did to get his tracks played? Aside from being a resident at Ministry of Sound for years (sometime in the mid 90s I believe): he started his own record label, joined forces with Serge Santiago and started making and signing music that other djs wanted to play. "Dick sucking" (I know you don't mean it in the literal sense) just isn't a factor and you're going to have to accept it. I don't really know what else to say.

Also, talking to him for 15 mins at B.E.D. hardly qualifies as knowing someone.

just a recap, instead of a woosh: you couldve explained why or what i said was wrong or what point was missed, but rather you decide to google an image of straws and post that. but yet, when julien essentially does the same thing by saying "fail", you correct him on it. when i point that out to you, you say "woosh". is this right?

I don't want to sit here and act like I'm privy with all the producers in the scene, but with RS, I have had more than just casual conversations with him about the weather. I'm not going by what I read on RA, or some blog. I'm going by what I've heard from him and other artists and people close to him. Like I said before. I'm not ing speculating as to whether or not he has "sucked dick" to get where he is. You can keep claiming that we're both at the same level, and I can keep explaining, that we're not. Or you can accept that in this instance you are speculating and I am talking about fact and reality, because I AM. I don't know what else to tell you. What you said. Was FLAT. OUT. Wrong. That is what I am telling you. It is no longer a matter of opinion, its a matter of reality vs. assumption. Again, whether or not you choose to accept that is your own personal choice.

Posting a photo of straws to point out that you are clutching at them, is different than saying "fail".

If you don't understand why that is, then there's no point in continuing the conversation.
