TTC strike: Weekend revellers stranded
April 26, 2008

Staff reporters
Clubs in the entertainment district cleared out quickly this morning when news of the TTC strike spread.
“My mom just called and told me about it,” said Amanda Luchetta, 19, a Ryerson University student. “Everybody’s been fighting over cabs, everybody’s going crazy, now the bank machines are down because people are trying to withdraw money.”
She and two of her girlfriends sat in a cab at Richmond and John Sts. Usually, the trio would take the subway up to Bathurst and Finch, but today they were going to split a $60 cab fare.
“It’s totally ridiculous,” Luchetta said of the strike.
Girlfriend Irina Smakobsky, 22, was going to go home, then get the car to pick up her mother, who works as a security guard at the airport and had no way home.
Another group of eight people were also stranded.
“We’re trying to get someone to pick us up,” said Richard Poras, 19, a McMaster University student. “Six taxis have already passed us by. F--- the TTC. Aren’t they supposed to give us some advanced notice?”
Their destination was Bloor and Runnymede.
The midnight strike came as a shock to both TTC workers and commuters out on the town, leaving many stranded with few options for getting home.
The workers overwhelmingly rejected the tentative agreement and announced at 10:47 p.m. that a strike was imminent.
In subways, an announcement was made at 11:23 p.m. telling collectors over their private intercom that service would be shutting down at midnight.
A public announcement didn’t start until almost 11:30.
It was barely enough time for many in the downtown core to find alternate routes home.
“No way, no way,” Jorge Bayona, out with friends at Yonge-Dundas Square, said at 11:40 p.m. “You’re kidding me. We live an hour away.”
The shock on his face escalated to panic, and he and his friends started trying to conjure up contingency plans.
Danielle Consett, 25, also expressed anger at the TTC’s union for voting against the tentative agreement - in favour of a last-minute strike.
“It’s a danger to society,” she said. “It’s selfish. We have rights, too. We have the right to know about a strike 48 hours in advance.”
Some TTC workers, on the job, expressed concern about their safety when asking people to leave the station, evident by the announcement heard at many stations: “If you’re having difficulty closing your station, let us know.”
“I’m kind of worried about how it will be when the last train comes and I’m dealing with a lot of angry people,” said a ticket collector, who didn’t want to give her name.
One man, who tried to get on a southbound train after they had just closed off the service about 11:50, starting cursing at her.
“We have to stick together,” the ticket collector said. “If they are going to contract out with the maintenance people, where does it end?”
But other TTC workers were less sympathetic.
“It’s not right to do it at midnight, we should just shut down at 2:30 at the end of service,” said Wayne Cook, ticket collector at Ossington, swarmed by confused commuters. “Bob Kinnear has a lot to answer for, for the way he’s handled things.”

beat it.
we DO work for the public.
and do a damn fine job regardless of how thankful (or not) you are.
For the record i don't approve of the Unions hasty decision. Obviously they should have gone back to the table before this bull.
What i am standing up for is the current conception that drivers are public enemy #1
Taking it out on individual workers is not fair and is not deserved.
I don't think i need to go into details because you've rode the buses and seen the . |

no, greedy and overpaid people are public enemy number 1 today..please don't give us a song and dance about how "badly" these drivers have it...maybe you should try my job..i deal with messed up people ALL day and probably don't get paid anywhere near a TTC driver's salary...you want some stories dude, i can give you some stories about the i see on an hourly basis....but, i'm not going to lash out because i chose to be in a field that exposes me to a certain fraction of the public....i realize that i'm gainfully employed, have decent benefits, a decent salary...what more do i need...?? maybe i should walk off the job cuz i only get 5 percent of my salary in rrsp's quarterly and i want it to be 5.25..or, i want my dental to be capped at 2 grand a year and not 1600...
the only reason they are doing this is because they have the ability to..they have a sweet deal but want it to be sweeter..unions are an outdated concept and have become a joke.......in a perfect world..they would all be fired..there are thousands upon thousands who would take those jobs, and do it with a in smile!
btw, i drive so i'm not angry because i don't have transportation... |

"We have assessed the situation and decided that we will not expose our members to the dangers of assaults from angry and irrational members of the public," said Bob Kinnear, ATU Local 113 President."
Angry? Yeah, no , but I don't think irrational is the word to use it as it seems to be perfectly rational to be angry at the they're pulling. |

Evidently not little piggy.
Apparently this is over job security for maintenance workers.
Just a thought..........
Does anyone else out there have an offer on the table with THREE YEARS of ing job security?
B/c I sure as hell can't think of anyone who isn't in a union that does.
Also, so what.... you're looking at becoming obselete b/c the city is finally taking steps toward efficient buses b/c that's what's in the interest of the public good. Wow. I kinda thought that was the point of a public service... you know, to operate in the best interest of the public.
So sorry swine, your time is up. And I for one hope they break your union's back once and for all with back-to-work and essential service legislation in the emergency session in the legislature tomorrow. And then send out the cops (also pigs) to arrest every one of you swine that doesn't show up for your shift b/c you don't like the thought that somewhere, sometime down the road you could be replaced by something more efficient.
It's s like this and their close-minded thinking that have helped render Toronto's transit system the disappointment that it is when compared with other major cities in developed countries of similar size.
So in closing: GTFO .... don't you have a union bitch session to attend? Where you and your piglet brothers will sidle up to the public trough again, hoping that once more we'll dump in a nice healthy load of apples and donuts for you to gobble up, laughing all the while about how once again you've successfully done the city on all fronts.
Well, it looks like the worm is about to turn, and I for one hope it gives you piggies fatal holes in the lining of your union's stomach. |
