The last minute ordeal was heartless, I agree.
Why do you think they did it that way? To make more of an impact?
It was more than likely a last minute decision. Now or never. |

I'm assuming they did it this way because they knew that if they gave a 48 hour notice, the public would most likely take their anger out on the TTC drivers for the 2 days between the notification and the strike? |

Yes more impact was the prime reason......So that they have the other side on the table for negotiating asap and have it resolved hopefully before monday..........If it was done on a regular day the public would have gone ape.....they will regardless if it carrys on more than a week. |

they promise 48 hours notice if they decide to strike...then the union tentatively agrees to a deal...the members reject it...and they suddenly strike without notice at midnight yesterday, which stranded people downtown and others woke up to go to work without any notice whatsoever that the TTC was out?
am I missing something here? because if not... these TTC turds.
It's time for the province to legislate the TTC as being an essential service to prevent this kind of bull from ever happening again.
This move just resulted in me reducing my already low level of sympathy for TTC workers to ZERO...and I rarely need use it, with this strike not affecting me *at all*. I just recognize that it's 100% unacceptable to over millions of people who rely on public transportation.
NO other sector impacts THAT many people on a daily basis...so it's high time to deem the TTC an essential service. |

who's not to say that some irrational members of the public won't retaliate against employees when they're ordered back to work on Monday? I just don't see the logic in this at all. I realize the union's right to strike, but ultimately any type of labour stoppage generally results in less public support for workers. Especially one that came with no warning at a non-ideal time of day. They could have at least simply shut regular service down on the system at their usual time of 2:30am. Apparently the media have been trying to reach union leaders about the chosen time of the strike, however unsuccessfully.

now with the back to work legislation coming into effect, the settlement will be arbitrated. If that results in a less favourable deal for the union, I'm eager to see the reaction from their leadership.

Absolutely right. They're going to get hell from the public anyways, striking on a weekend that was really big for downtown commuters (TFC game, Raptors game, and Jays game).
I'm really pissed they did that. It's a good thing we have a car and don't rely solely on the friggin TTC to commute downtown otherwise we'd have been royally screwed :whip: :whip: :whip: |
