cons:
-venue was too small, I couldn't breathe much less dance
-sound was insufficient for a PvD event (imo)

pros:
-the 30-40 fine women that tried to push their way by me and got copped a feel on.

*shrug* After the bacardi 151 drinks it was fun I suppose. nowhere near compared to the other times I've seen him in Dallas.

The will-call list was freaking long as hell. But I was so damn happy we were on a guestlist for VIP that JWord just brought us up front and in we went. That saved a ton of aggravation big time!

** Openers rocked it.

Johnny Funk - We got there pretty early when there was tons of room to dance around. Johnny was throwing down some great tunes. I was loving it. It seemed kind of different from the regular stuff he usually plays. The visual screens that J Word put up were awesome! It really gave the place a whole new look. The visuals were really new and even had the dvdj's playing during opening sets (they are called dvdj's, right? i might be wrong) They were song specific anyway and I thought that was cool. It started packing in and Johnny started going crazy from the crowd. He was throwing down faster and harder stuff and the place was going wild. My fav was when he threw down Planet Soul. Wow! lol My favorite visual video was when he threw on What The and the weather guy came on the screens. I recorded some video of it. It really made me say wtf. lol

Mike D! - I was so excited and nervous for Mike! Johnny's set was heavy and fast and Mike usually is not like that. If you never heard him, he's really deep, dark and slow. So we were all wondering, "how is Mike going to do this???" Not only that, but as Johnny was ending his set, people were already chanting for PvD. He completely did his thing - didn't care about Johnny's set LOL He started out with a dramatic deep nightmar-ish opening and it just sounded perfect. Once the bass beat came in people were cheering. And Mike played on from there. Our group was yelling, "LONDON NIGHTS! LONDON NIGHTS!" (which is a party he hosts every month, if you haven't been- go! You will hear you've never ever heard before!) I think Mike appreciated our support and smiled and pointed at us. I'm glad I was there to see him play. He really is something.

Bar whoes - Towards the end of Mike's set, it was getting ridiculous down there! So I thought we should go get some water before PvD came on. We had to make a strategy of which bar would be the quickest line. We stand at our normal one, the one downstairs near the main room. It was way crowded. So we thought about the slutty girl that sells water and cigarettes in her little booth near that bar. We found out she doesn't take cards. (yeah, didn't have cash. We could have used the atm there, but the charge was $3, and that's ridiculous) So we thought the bar on the rooftop would not be long at all. We ran all the way to the roof. Yeah ---- cash only. So we thought about the bar in VIP ---- um, we get there and it's cash only. So we go back downstairs and to the bar in the video lounge. We know he takes cards. We stood there FOREVER! By the time I got up to the bar, he says his card machine isn't working. ARRRGG!!! By this time, I'm effin thirsty. So we end up back at the main bar near the main room. Stood in line forever. I decided to get 4 bottles of water and pay out so I never have to go to the bar again.

PvD - I completely missed PvD's opening because of the water crap. It was so packed in there that we decided to go up to VIP to get some breathing room. The only spot we could stand in was the worst spot in the whole place. There were so many people that I never even saw the stage while PvD was playing - never even got to see the guy. And the spot we were standing in was straight BASS. It felt like there was an earthquake and I couldn't even decifer what the song was.

Couldn't breathe....Couldn't see.....Couldn't hear
PVD came on at 1am
we left at 1:15
I think it was worse packed than the Armin incident

I almost cried while coming home. It was the 2nd time I went to a PvD show, and both times I left during the first of his set. The last time was an awesome outdoor show, but my friend was feeling awful, so I had to leave and bring him home. So yeah....still wanting to see this wonderful PvD show I keep hearing about.

I think from now on if it's a major headliner like PvD or Armin and it's inside the LL - no more - will not go. But the only reason we went was because it was free. If it wasn't, we weren't going at all. I'd be pissed if I had to pay to endure all of that.
But all is not bad - I loooooved the openers gigs!

Well, what a mess. I have seen PVD like 5 times in NYC (Central Park, Crobar, Roxy) and once to Tokyo (Agiha). This was the worst by far. Could not move or dance, and PVD new that he could not get real hard at any point because the room could not handle it.

People are nice, but this was for sure the most packed room I have ever been to. After 5 years in NYC I had never seen something as over sold as this.

I first came down to Texas for a weekend last year and saw Armin at LL, it was crowded then, but not this bad.

Anyways I rolled in about 12:45, and left a little after 3. Found it interesting that PVD played some more stuff that sounded more like breaks. Had not heard much of that in his sets before. I have not seen him since Summer Sound Stage 2 years ago though, so maybe he plays more of that everywhere now.

The scene is so young down here. I need some Steve Lawler, Victor Caldrone, Deep Dish and Sander K. I need some good house music. If the promoter reads this then please bring them down...

Also when you can sell a space out to 21+ and hopefully sell some drinks, then keep the Event 21+ like Made Events in NYC does...

All just my thoughts. I am back up in NYC most all of next week, thank goodness.

LOL welcome to Texas - Don't expect any changes any time soon. This was predictable.

the Lizard Lounge is definitely too small of a venue for these big name DJs! it should have been an outside event.

My friend, Brad, took some awesome pics of last night. Here are a few.

Johnny Funk's crowd

Mike Detloff's crowd

and PvD's Crowd

The thing about Johnny's set... was that it didn't really have any consistency to it, and he had a very tough time with his transitions. I heard two trainwrecks (that everyone else heard as well) The track selection was what it was. I liked a few of the songs in there..but it just seemed like he was playing random tracks rather than trying to build a set and work the crowd. From what I heard of the beatmatching..I was led to believe he needs more practice perhaps. Just my opinion.

Mike D played a great set. I found myself dancing more to his stuff, then when Jerry Bonham opens for PvD.

Oh I agree. Johnny started getting wild once the crowd started getting pumped up, so he started getting sloppy for sure. But he does that from time to time. He really can pump up the crowd with his track selection and his stage presence.

I had a great time for all the sets. At 11:15 I saw a spot clear up on the circle stage with the dancing pole....stayed there until 3:45. I have no complaints about space where I was at, I was able to dance the whole night (although LL was PACKED, never seen the VIP section so cramped). My favorite tracks he played lastnight were Crush & Let Go. I went with a group of 16 and not one of them had a bad time either.

My complaints: LL staff can't stick to a straight set of rules. Not able to spin lights at beginning, middle they dont care, end they care again.

PvD deserved palladium ballroom, we all did for $40 a ticket.

Obviously the lizard lounge is an absolute joke and insult to artists like pvd and armin, and completely miserable and unfair to to anyone who set foot inside the place on those nights. I understand there are limitations to where you can have a show like this in Dallas, but it is an absolute atrocity how selfish either full access or the lizard lounge is by letting so many people in. It just goes to show that all they care about is making money, and they could care less about providing true fans with a good experience. People like that obviously have no business sense or the ability to run a business the right way, and thats why they are booking and running small shows in Dallas, and will never amount to anything.

As for the show, I almost fell asleep in the middle of the dance floor when Mike was playing. It just seemed horribly inappropriate to have someone play that slow for a crowd that was that anxious and hyped up. That kind of music has it's place, and I'm sure Mike plays some good sets and has a following, but every person I talked to was very bored and counting the minutes till pvd's set.

PvD absolutely murdered it as always. That guy never ceases to amaze me. Upstairs was really crowded and you couldn't see anything, but we actually found a little space downstairs after the first hour where we could see and enjoy the show. Playing 3 or 4 encores was really cool of Paul. He definitely remains number 1 in my book.
