| The reason why gas prices are so high right now is because consumer spending is down, the government sees that you guys are spending less money elsewhere and trying to save more, so they need to raise prices on gas so they can gouge the money you arent spending on leisure items. Its a bit of a balancing act on their part, but more complex than just that. |

The government does not control the price of gas. |

The reason why the gas are high is because the demand is high and the price of oil.
If the demand drops, the price will do the same. Not by alot though... it would be nice to get gas under $2.50 a gallon, but those days are gone.
++ in California.. the taxes for gas is around $.36 - $.42
On your next visit to the gas station, look on the pump and it will give the exact amount. |

high prices are old news and nothing to be mad about. let's talk about how stupid e85 ethanol and suspending the federal gas tax is... |
+1
ethanol itself and the production of, causes more damage then we were told it would reduce, and has been a colossal waste of time, money, and resources.
now food is incredible expensive and there are hunger riots going on around the world, just look at Haiti or Africa |

Well, not directly. It does control the taxes on gas, though. I was reading the other day that the cost in Europe is approx. $8 a gallon mostly because of taxes, which are $5-6 per US gallon equivalent. They used the taxes to build efficient public transportation systems.
The US encourages low taxes on gas, something like 50 cents/gallon. So, when the cost of oil rises, we feel it more since the actual price of oil is a much larger percentage of the total (in Europe, if gas goes up 50 cents, then it's $8.50 instead of $8, so the increase doesn't seem so bad).
By keeping the taxes low, America achieves the great honor of watching its infrastructure crumble, buries its public transportation system, and also encourages consumption. People drive hundreds of miles to work at approx. 0 mph, so I wasn't surprised to hear that the average American consumes three times as much gas as someone in Europe.
Then again, if Los Angeles did tax gas at $6 dollars a gallon, the government would probably build a subway from LAX to the ocean without any stops...at least more fish could fly though...

I know this, lol, and I've been a supporter of raising gas taxes for those very infrastructure projects you talk about. My point was he made it seem like they change the tax at random, which is not true, the taxes change very little over the years. |
