we've got about a week and a half to go til Summer Madness. We're getting short interviews from all the headlining djs....
Victor Dinaire was kind of enough to answer some questions for us today...
Vic, You’re back! You left NYC a couple years ago…to California, then to Miami. What sparked the desire to move, and ultimately what brought you back?
When I left NYC for California back in 2004, I was dying for a change. That in my opinion was the ideal time to leave New York because it seemed like little was happening here for trance music unless you are one of the big 4 (PvD, Ferry, Armin, Tiesto). Moving to Southern California ended up being the best decision of my life. My music career really took off and living there was an amazing experience. I plan to move back there in 2009. Miami unfortunately wasn't the same experience. While I enjoy to visit and perform there, it didn't feel like home to me. I felt like a fish out of water. I still go there on the first Friday of every month to play at Blue, a cool intimate locals spot. I returned to New York to work on music projects. It's great to be back. I am connecting with life long friends and family. In addition, I am actively playing in my home town which I miss.
You’ve been a steady fixture in New York’s club scene for the better part of a decade now. NYC was, and to a large degree still is, primarily known as a ‘house’ city…tell us about your experiences coming up as a trance DJ in NYC
Playing trance has always been a challenge here but I strongly believe that New York is ready to embrace it on a larger scale. It's great to see fans requesting DJ's like Sean Tyas, John Askew, Rank1 in addition to the obvious ones. It shows that they are really doing their homework on the entire spectrum of trance music which is healthy for the scene to grow. There are so many talented DJ's out there and it's about time they play here frequently..
Back in the day you started out as a promoter for venues like Limelight, Tunnel and The Palladium. 100’s of clubs have opened and closed since then. What have been your favorite venues over the course of the past 10 years? What are your current favorites?
Limelight, Tunnel, and Twilo are my all time favorite clubs in NY. An honorable mention was Club USA. I surely hope club venues start incorporating themes and multiple music formats into their events by utilizing all their side rooms and developing local artists more. It gave the parties so much dynamics and it helped to bring out more creativity. Currently, I think Webster Hall has potential to capitalize on that.
Best gig ever?
Avalon Hollywood in 2006 when I played a 3 hour set after Tiesto. Best show I ever had.
Worst gig ever?
Oh boy. Too many to mention.
You have a very successful and well known show on XM Radio called The Lost Episode. How did that come together?
I started my radio career at Sirius Satellite Radio back in 2003. I learned a tremendous amount and saw the massive demand for proper electronic dance music on the radio in the states. After a year there, I moved over to Music Choice in 2004 where I launched "Resident Nation" which at the time gave me a much larger platform to spread my music. Soon after that, I was approach by XM to do a show for them. Doing the weekly radio shows is a lot of work but there is nothing like turning on the TV's Dance Channel or driving and catching the Lost Episode show. It always puts a smile on my face.
Word is you’ve gotten into the studio to work on some tracks. Who have you been working with, what gear are you using, when is the first release dropping?
I have been heavily into production lately with 4 open projects in the works. Most of my time is with Logic but I also use Ableton. With a handful of immensely talented producers at our arsenal, the Lost Episode record label is set to launch at the end of this year.
Summer Madness is coming up. What do you have in store?
I'm so excited to be involved on such an all star line up. I believe I go on after Tom Colontonio so expect some serious tunage! The last few weeks have been great music wise to expect non stop energy

he's a sick dj. I remember the first time I heard him, he played on a Saturday at Exit, and dropped Jurgen Vries - The Theme. He immediately became one of my favorite trance djs. :toothless |
