Zack Roth's interview... Zack talks about his first clubbing experience, new label, and what he has in store for Summer Madness...check it out! :)
How did you get into the club scene?
The first real club I ever went to was Twilo, back when I was maybe 19. (No, this is not going to turn into one of those “OMG, Sasha and Digweed @ Twilo totally changed my life bro,” stories, I promise. ) I was home from college on Winter break, and got dragged there by a friend. My fake ID got shot down, I had no clue how to score drugs, and I hated it. On the way home I was convinced I would never step foot into a club again.
Haha, ok, so what eventually got you into back into a club and dance music in general?
Well, the next year I got expelled from college for being a jack ass. I was home, and literally had nothing to do. One of my friends at the time started promoting at a club called Exit, and convinced me to give it another try. Right before we went into the club, my friend handed me a little yellow pill with an alligator on it and assured me I would not die if I took it. Next thing I knew, I was standing in the DJ booth while some freaky looking guy with dread locks DJed to 2000 people. I hadn’t heard music like that before. Up until that night, my dance music MP3 folder was 3 songs deep… “Castles in The Sky,” “Sandstorm,” and “I’ll Fly with You” by Gigi D’Agostino.

How would you describe your style and how has changed it over the years?
I started out going mainly to trance parties, seeing guys like PVD, Tiesto, Scot Project, Christopher Lawrence, etc… so when I started DJing, I bought nothing but trance. At the time (2003), a lot of my friends (some of whom were promoters) were really into house music. It basically came down to, if I wanted to play out, I had to incorporate housey stuff into my sets. I started buying a lot of progressive house records, then gradually got into a bit of techno as well. The more I listened to housier stuff, the more I liked it. Eventually I phased out trance almost completely….not because I stopped liking it though. Trance is still one of my favorite genres of dance music. Its just when you’re starting out, your first gigs tend to be at small lounges, or in side rooms. So it’s a little awkward to be playing a 10PM - 11:30 slot and banging it out with sick 140 bpm trance.
So how would you classify your current sound as a DJ?
These days the lines between genres are so damn blurred, its really tough to just say “I’m a progressive house DJ.” I play lots of techno, tech house, some electro too sometimes. Depending on the night, I can still get a little trancey as well. ;o)
Favorite Track of all time?
As a DJ, Remy’s “Dustsucker” and Villanord’s “Futurescope” have been 2 of my big bombs since I started DJing.
Favorite gig?
The best gig I have ever had…hmmm… I would have to say playing on the classics night last year at Love. Like I said, I started out as a trance DJ. For the most part though, I never got a chance to play a lot of those amazing older tracks. Getting to play tracks like Rank 1 - Airwave, Ascension - Someone, Albion - Air was pretty amazing. Those were the tracks that got me into djing back in the day, so it was kind of a walk down memory lane for me. Not to mention how souped everyone in the crowd was to be hearing all those oldies. I have a feeling my second favorite gig will be THIS year’s classics night with M.I.K.E. aka Push. ;O)
You’ve been a resident DJ at Love for a couple years now. What’s that been like?
Horrible.
I’m kidding obviously, its been great. A lot of the work that goes into getting our nights off the ground can be stressful as hell, but at the end of the night I just can’t wait ‘til the next party. The past 2 and a half years I’ve gotten a chance to play alongside some amazing DJs that really run the gamut musically, and that’s been huge for me in terms of developing my own sound.
With the success of the release of your first production, “Double Overhead,” do you plan to focus more heavily on production work at this time?
Yeah, absolutely. My goal is to make this into a career, and in my eyes production is very key to making that happen. Putting out quality productions gets you recognition from a global audience. I ignored production for years to focus on DJing, so the past year I have been doing some serious cramming haha. I have been working on a lot of new stuff the past few months though, and I have collaborations with some familiar faces in the works as well. So look out.
Which djs/producers are you feeling at the moment?
Oh wow, I like so many producers representing so many different styles of music. As a DJ, some of my go-to producers are guys like Chris Micali, Dousk, KOS, Oliver Moldan, Jay Lumen, Noel Sanger, Stan Kolev, Ozgur Can, Oliver Koletzki, old-school James Holden, Moonbeam, Gabriel Ananda, I could be here forever. On the local front, Clouded Minds from NYC are putting out some seriously great music. We just signed two of their tracks to our label, Cloudbreak Recordings. The release should be out any day now. Check it out.
Ok, so Summer Madness is next week, thoughts?
Thoughts? Yeah. Get ing ready! I’m so damn pumped for this one. I’m playing right before Preach, so be prepared for a banger-filled set.
