It's only awkward if the two people shaking hands reach out left vs right at the exact same time. Even then they can still shake and the awkwardness from a left shaking a right hand can lead to humor which can break the ice in an introduction.
Keep it a right vs right custom makes things awkward when the right hand is full or occupied with something else. It should be a common sense thing where whenever a person extends a certain hand out, you reciprocate with the same, and not freak out when it's the left.

Probably because the majority of the people are right handed. But with this whole "equality for everyone" idea coming around, you know like giving women the right to vote, and giving blacks the right to ride the front of the bus, I figure why not give lefties a chance to extend their best arm? |

i rarely shake hands. i did it in germany (everyone did there). but here its only for like sports and meeting someone higher up at work...that's about it.
although if friends reach out to shake, i'll reciprocate...and will make an effort to use right hand.

So you are supporting the right hand shake custom because it's proper in certain areas of the country even though are irrelevant in other parts? Or because it signifies a gesture that has long since dissipated since the time where one would be "holding a weapon"? If the latter is true, then to me it's like you're saying, "I listen to songs that are only between 3 and 4 minutes in length, because when the first records came out they were spinning at 78 RPM and therefore couldn't fit more than 4 minutes on one side." Maintaining a custom isn't necessary if it was historically important for survival but no longer is today. |
