| I didn't read most of this thread as it is mostly a bunch of boring , but all you s that think hand shaking is stupid or whatever, need to get the out of the US. It is a form of respect. All my Russian, French, and German friends I know, all shake out of RESPECT. Not because of some social norm that you are attributing it to. ugh |

Once in a while I'll meet someone and either I reach out my left hand (because there's a 50% chance I happen to decide to shake with that hand) or something's in my right hand and I have no choice but to extend out the left. When I do this sometimes the recipient of the shake refuses to shake, insisting that I use my right hand, even if it's full of something. They explain that it's "rude" to shake with my left hand and look at me like I'm some retard that never learned to tie his shoes.
Okay people, shaking with your right hand, albeit an old American tradition, should have now died off with the rest of the Jim Crow Stepford Housewife McCarthy Era laws and moreways. Why the right hand? Is it better? No. It's retarded. If I give you my left hand you better ing shake it.
I've suffered long enough as a left-handed person, being persecuted and looked down upon just because I shake with my left hand. Well IT'S NOT A CHOICE PEOPLE! I was BORN this way! Don't you see? I bet you don't and neither did Helen Keller. Now she's dead. Probably due to right hand exposure and not enough nourishment from shaking her left hand. I don't want the same fate.
I can't help but to introduce myself from the opposing hand that your sorry righty-ass has long since been oppressauring. What next, ban left-handed marriages? Symmetry is at stake here. Left hands shall rise.
THINK ABOUT IT! ...I'm off to the gym now.

lol Well, then you need to just start shaking! lol jk :p
Is it used as a form of respect in Brazil? I know that, generally, with most Europeans it is customary and respectful to do it. Especially eastern Europeans. |

I do shake hands with people, it's like the standard greeting with guys around here (you're supposed to kiss girls). And, just like in the US, there are people who think it's a fundamental aspect of social life, that it represents who you are and whatnot... and there are others that don't really care that much. Personally, I just want to show I've acknowledged someone else's presence and that I'm open to interaction =/ |

*I fixed some grammar, but it's the same otherwise. ;)*
This is the area that I was referring to with respect. It is deeply rooted in me, because of the friends I acquired as an early teen, and it resonates in me today. That has been 10 years, and now, I can't see myself without it. It is an ice breaker, a way to show that you are open for conversation, and also, shows that you recognize that they are new. They are less likely to feel left out. |

| well, just as gehzumwhatever said, it's a sign of respect, and you can't give "the dead fish" and you should look in the eyes while shaking a hand :] at least that's how it works in eastern european where I am :] |
