i dont believe that.
music is an artform where sound is the medium. wikipedia agrees with me on this. so if a person is able to make these sounds, regardless of what instruments are used, then he/she is a musician. if a person can make burps and farts sound good, that person is a musician.

he's probably just jealous of his success. What do you have? a PhD? A Playa hatin degree? (p-diddy yes!)

Seriously...he seems like a cool guy. He played my request when he came to Toronto and was having fun with ppl around him (shots!).

I think it still takes skill to engineer those tracks..the longest road remix is still pretty damn good and I like that new track that's out on Beatport (not alone? i think its called). And yo he's going out with Sydney Blu too who's not all that bad looking.

It's the same way boy bands are called boy BANDS. They sing...the majority of them don't play any instruments. Musicians come in many forms.

What is it instrumental musicians do that makes EDM producers non-musicians?

hahah,, completely agree +1

Good on you for teaching yourself the tricks of the trade.. being able to be self-taught is an amazing ability that not many people have. In I.T. world sometimes you have no choice but to learn by yourself.

also, joel explains in the interview he and bsod are learning how to use a paticular device ..the monotone ..sp prob not right.. but good on them for self-learning!

i find this thread to be extremely ignorant (on djbombtrack's part).

a person does not need to be a trained musician to make music, especially with electronic music. its not hard to understand the concept of it when it comes to bars/measures and all that stuff. as long as you have the basics and have a great idea and know how to implement it, then you have the chance to be successful. even some of house music's biggest names and originators would agree with me. just watch History Of House Music and you will see.

i think im a good example of this but in a slightly different industry. i did not go to school for photography. i happened to be at guv on night many years ago and met shaya. after looking through his pics i decided that i wanted to give it a try and went out and bought my very first camera (sony dsc-p72). that was my first time using a camera. i taught myself everything and i think i know enough to get by. there is always room to learn more.

Anyone who thinks you have to be a real "musician" to make "electronic music" is obviously a n00b...since real e-music is mostly based and just random sounds, computer generated tones/synths, etc. etc. sometimes with just basic melodies if any at all....I've met real musicians and heard em play...they can play the guitar, piano whatever for hours upon hours yet I cannot for one minute get into their stuff..i appreciate what they do..but the music iteslf? meh.

What you have here is a classic case of technology redefining established labels.

Up until what, 20 years ago, being a musician meant you play an instrument. It had to, there was no other meaning.

If you spin, you're a DJ, not a musician. You create nothing. Fair enough, you might put a lot of work into a mix, but you are still augmenting exsisting work. If you sequence your own track, that's enough for me to call you a musician - and I'm a guitar player/sound engineer/know-it all.

At the end of the day, it's a semantic argument.

Let's all leave Joel alone and wait for his next track to drop.

Oh, and djbombtrack...how come I've never heard of you?
