Review Tygon & Global Killer at Purple Room
View this Thread in Original format

I've never started a review thread before, and I don't even really post reviews at all, but I feel strongly enough about last night that it merits a thread.

First off, I don't know how it's possible for 4 different people to lose their wallet all in one night, but it seemed to be the general excuse yesterday for bailing on coming out.

I came down from London with a few friends from my building, that don't generally listen to EDM in the fisrt place, but who are originally from Brantford, and mentioned that they liked the Rev.

We got to the Purple Room at about 12, and there were maybe 10 people there, but Tim was pumping out some excellent tunes, as always.

Just as Dan predicted, the room filled up with people about a half hour later, and Tim had the crowd going pretty hard with some solid beats. Everything was going great(despite the lack of people in our group, and the two sluts dancing in the booth all wrecked on a coctail of chemicals, with no clue of who DJ is) up until Tim was done, at which point "Global Killer" came on.

All I have to say is WOW. I don't think that I've seen someone clear a dance floor that fast in my entire time at PR. The guy must have train-wrecked at least 3 times in a 15 minute span. My non-EDM-listening friends were like, "Yeah, this is why we don't listen to [techno]". His track selection sucked to boot. He was all over the place. He went from trance to electro to house to ing Sarah McLachlan.

At this point there are maybe 3 people left on the dance floor(consisting of the sketchy asian broad who wears the same pants every time I see her, and two cute gay boys, who were griding on eachother's dicks and making out in the middle of the dance floor), so we decided it would be a good time to go out for a smoke, and hoped that when we returned things would look a little better, and oh, how wrong we were.

When we got back he had completly killed(pun intended) the dance floor. The only person left was the sketchy asian, the tunes were as bad, if not worse than when we left, and the guy was standing there in a Jesus pose. Like, who does that? You just cleared the floor dude! Who are you trying to hype up? The bartender?! Give me a ing break!

We decided it was time to go.

I envy everyone who found better things to do last night, than to endure(and I understand that this was a misjudgement on my part, I could have left at any time, but I was trying to be optimistic, and there have been times when a DJ has come on weak but finished out the night on a high note) this guys pathetic excuse for music. Kudos on your keen foresight, you're still all bastards for bailing.

To sum things up, "Global Killer" globally sucked the big one, and I will be too happy if I never have to suffer through another one of his globally ty sets.

Side note: Tim spun a great set, and had it not been for him, the night would have been an epic fail.

lol! 100% true though Jen

I left 10minutes after he went on, by the time you came back from your smoke, I already booked it lol

All I have to say is this. You can mix any two songs together when you're DJing, any two songs, weither or not it will sound good is a different story, and it won't just magically sound good by itself. This is one of the most important skills with a DJ, track selection. It makes the difference between people on the floor dancing their ass off, and people going :conf:  :whip: :( then leaving.

its always good to get some feedback on a night...

first off let me say it wasnt just me on the decks... it was myself and brad jones... also i let brad start as he had expressed interest to start off with a steve lawler track..

the monitors and bassbins were cutting out a few times, and while i wont use that as an excuse, it didnt help that it happened. and didnt help that it sucked the life right out of the tunes too!

not all of us play exactly what style you prefer, and no i wont play armin van buuren, his stuff isnt in my style..

as for track selection, i didnt play sarah mclaughlin, altho brad did, i did however play a new alannis morissette remix being released by eyezcream recordings..

the one thing people fail to realise is the purpleroom is always a challenge as its not a typical edm room. and yes tim was great! he plays there every week and should have a following and be more familliar with the crowds!

im sorry you felt unhappy, we get great feedback on sets in toronto all the time, and gigs elsewhere... maybe my tracks werent your slice of pie.. i cant speak for brad, but we did enjoy ourselves with those who did stay and have fun..

sorry if you felt it was an epic fail, hoping to send you a cd to prove otherwise!

Wow, respect to you for not being a ed goose here. Although, come on man. Alanis Morissette. I don't care what it is, it's still Alanis Morissette.

Yeah true enough, respect on that one for sure.

I'll admit, that room is hard to keep people in, and it's a weird room to be honest. 1 minute it's packed, the next it's not, then you're just chilling talking to a friend, look back, and it's packed again lol.

I guess it was just the transition from the style Tim was spinning to you guys, within two songs it was totally different, just a big change.

PM me a link so I can download a set you have.

Don't go getting all soft on me here, Rob. I have an image to maintain. People might actually think I'm sociable enough to have friends.

What he said^

However, most of your response was pregnant with excuses. Excuses aren't hard to make, which leads me to believe that Jer put more effort into his post than you did into that set, and it would seem as though you really don't care for the feedback or care to take any of it constructively in order to better yourself.
