the strength of the dollar really depends on the federal reserve board's committment to responsible monetary policy. the president can try to pressure the fed all he wants, as bush has done the last 8 years, but ultimately it's up to them how strong they want the dollar to be. every time they devalue the dollar it's a one-two punch cause when the fed isn't showing concern over its value, then traders require a premium to take your undesirable money. so as it stands now, expect to hear more foreign languages while you wait in line at the club this summer. especially late summer when all the europeans are looking to party.

when i got back into the "scene" in the spring of 2005, i told myself that i would wanna see every DJ @ least once depending on how much they impressed me

so in a year & a half i went to Avalon 62 out of 78 wks & that wasnt even counting King King & the beginnings of Vanguard. Then when WMC rolled around in Mar 06, it filled up pretty much the rest of the gaps in my personal DJ list

so for me, that has been the reason for not going out as often

also, ive noticed a dramatic dropoff in the turnout @ these clubs & anyone who was @ this past year's WMC will attest that attendance was off by about 25%. So w/all the uncertainty w/people's job status, the effect of inflation & gas prices, it's just been harder for people to go out & enjoy themselves more regularly.

friends that i know who would go out every wknd, now only go out once a month

gas prices, along with my ibiza/italy trip next month has put a damper on my clubbing for the past 6 months for sure. That, along with the lack of a fun weekly club to hang out at every sat:(

Regulators Moving to Curb Speculative Oil Trading

quote:
U.S. oil futures regulators and their U.K. counterparts have reached a deal with ICE Futures Europe to impose first-ever regulations on West Texas Intermediate oil contracts that trade on the London-based electronic exchange, the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said.

"After consultation with the British (Financial Services Authority), the CFTC is announcing that ICE Futures Europe has agreed to begin the process of implementing position and accountability limits on its linked crude oil contract," CFTC Acting Chairman Walter Lukken said in written testimony to a joint U.S. Senate panel.

The move will place more limits on trading of the U.S. benchmark WTI contract on the London exchange, which hosts up to 30 percent of total volumes.

The New York Mercantile Exchange, which the CFTC regulates, hosts the rest.

U.S. regulators are feeling heat from U.S. lawmakers to rein in what they see as excessive speculation in commodities markets, and to make it harder for traders to skirt regulations through "dark markets" like ICE where the CFTC has little oversight.

The CFTC has launched a raft of measures including a nationwide investigation of crude oil markets.

But Lukken conceded that crude oil markets are "ripe for those wanting to illegally manipulate the markets." Oil prices have soared 40 percent since January to record highs near $140 a barrel, and many U.S. lawmakers - mostly in the Democratic majority - see excessive speculation as the main culprit.

The CFTC will seek similar limits for other foreign exchanges that trade contracts linked to U.S. futures contracts, Lukken told a joint hearing before two Senate committees - the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and the Committee on Appropriations' financial services subcommittee.

Charles Vice, president and chief operating officer of the Atlanta-based IntercontinentalExchange Inc, said it is "highly unlikely" that ICE Futures Europe is the "primary driver" behind WTI prices.

Expectations that more regulations on ICE trading will tame prices "are likely to go unmet," Vice said in testimony.

Maybe there's some hope.

I am surprised that more of you have not added to this thread. :conf:

As a weekly event promoter i have seen a significant drop in attendance. True it is very hard to judge that circumstances of why the attendance drop off in recent times. I have spoken to club owners & promoters of events & the same reply has been received throughout all.

"Times are tough."

IMO i feel its the gas prices, job status quo, rents, rise in food prices & for some the mortgage meltdown has been the leading factor in the recent attendance drop.

On the other hand i also agree with many of you the headlining act is always a key for interest in attending.

Please continue to suggest your thoughts/opinions/ideas. :toocool:

I think it's difficult to pin point specifically how and to what extent the combination of "bad" circumstances have changed our personal habits, and we might not calculate those things weekend from weekend, but collectively, when all of us do it, it adds up and as others are saying, the promoters feel it.

First, for me, driving a V8 is starting to hurt me. I haven't necessarily replaced driving with public transportation, but I now make fewer pointless trips, like going across the bay to IKEA just to browse around.

I've slowed down on the techno events where people just stand around "appreciating" the music. I'm avoiding events where I'm not sure that I'll last for more than a couple hours. This is especially true of weeknight events that try to charge more than $5 for non headliners. If I'm already out on the town, sure I'll drop $10, but I'm not doing $10 for a happy hour... especially for the dozen or so weekly techno events that the KONTROL posse has started doing in the last year.

Lately, I haven't been frequenting some of the yuppier socializing clubs that fill up regardless of the act, but wondering how those are doing.

But as cycles go, I think this will weed out some of the promoters and events... just natural.

I'm doing less club hopping; previously I would do a guest list, have pre-sales for another, do a third event at full cover, and then do end up at $20, but lately I've preferred to do one event that's the best guarantee at a good time.

In terms of drinking, I prefer to just go at it once a week usually Saturdays, and then any other day, I'll just do a beer just to have something in my hand.

As someone else also mentioned, I'm sort of caught up with "seeing every DJ at least once" so I can slow down with that.

Once again, I'm not necessarily on a conscious mission to save money or meet a certain monthly budget, but I think stuff like hitting $60+ at the gas station a couple times a week is subconsciously sinking in.

When gas and everything else that has gone up was manageable, it was easier coming out to weekly events...but I have to say as of late...headliners are what we plan for...which are always surrounded by great residents...

so it is like having our cake and eating it too...since we are not always able to be there to support the locals at least once a month we can catch global and local talent together for one night :D So keep those headliners coming...Giuseppe Ottaviani live maybe :tongue2 :tongue2

By the way the poll is lookin, it looks like Dj is leading...

Be sure to vote on the poll too if you can folks. Thanks to everyone who voted so far.

Whats important to you when you are choosing to go to an Event/Party?

Price 6 17.65%
Dj 25 73.53%
Venue 2 5.88%
lenght of event 1 2.94%

When a DJ (headliner) that I like & would love to see comes to a venue that I don't care for, I have a hard time deciding on whether I should go or not. It's not really how much it will cost me to see the DJ but all the other things that add up as to why I don't like going to certain venues.

Yeah my fav venue is Circus and it really doesn't matter if a big headliner comes there or not... I always enjoy going there for many reasons and pretty much always have fun too.

djjoshuaallen
at this point, i have seen nearly every DJ that i desire to see, outside of a few who never make it to the US anyway. So i only go out for a few of my favs DJ's when they are in town.

It is gas, driving from OC to LA w/ parking it costs me about $30 just to get into the club. Since Spundae @ Circus is no longer around, unless im playing or seeing one of my few favorite DJ's it just is not worth it to me right now.
Jerry Chiu
Yes, however, it won't stop me from seeing my favorite DJ play :)
