Forget about honour killings in Iran; How about Aqsa Parvez, right here in Toronto, Canada...

Aqsa's death cries out for right thing
By JOE WARMINGTON

Before 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez even stepped inside her family's Mississauga home last December, Peel Regional Police now believe, there was a plan to kill her.

And yesterday they went before the court to upgrade the original second-degree murder charge against her father to first-degree.

"A planned and deliberate act" is how Peel Regional Police's head of homicide Insp. Norm English yesterday described the heinous Dec. 10, 2007, strangulation murder.

Now, because of that determination, former taxi driver Muhammad Parvez, 58, faces an even stiffer legal fight. And Peel cops may not be finished, indicating at least one other member of that family could be "blameworthy."

"I said from the beginning that her brother has culpability in his sister's murder and my view on that has not changed," English said adamantly. "He's living with this and I am sure there are some other people living with this as well."

Waqas Parvez, 26, who is before the courts on a charge of obstructing police in the investigation, was in the home at the time of the murder, as were Aqsa's mom and sister.

Although there had been unconfirmed hints of rifts in -side the home over the victim's refusal to wear a traditional hijab head scarf, this charge is the first official indication that more may have gone on here than a spontaneous, heated discussion that went horribly wrong.

"There has been so much speculation," said English. "People probably should wait for the trial before drawing too many conclusions and we all must ensure that those charged are given their day in court and a fair trial."

Peel homicide detectives have had open minds with this case from the beginning -- determined to get to the bottom of what really did transpire. English said police are all ears from all of the people who were in the home. "Trying to get through these barriers is very difficult," he said. "Maybe it's time for people to do the right thing in Aqsa's memory."

A lot of people since that horrible December day have been searching for some meaning in this case. Could her embracing Western culture been a factor in a practising Muslim family which had originally come to Canada from Pakistan when Aqsa was still an infant? Could this have been Canada's first documented religious honour murder?

These are both difficult and complicated questions that nobody seems prepared to confirm or rule out.

One thing it does mean is police believe Aqsa Parvez's murder was considered, planned and deliberate. It also means Peel cops are determined to prosecute anyone involved.

And mostly, if it can be proved that this was an honour killing, it means police are trying to protect other young women in potential danger coast to coast from facing the same fate.

"We just go where the investigation takes us," said English. "Our job is to ensure there is justice for Aqsa."

Honour murders are one of those realities in many countries around the world where some follow extra-strict Muslim doctrine. In Germany, police recorded 48 honour homicides in the decade preceding 2006. "It is going to get worse before it gets better," said Tarek Fatah, founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress. "There needs to be honest debate about it."

He said with some Islamic extremists believing "women are property and to be owned like cattle" he is not surprised allegations of honour murder would eventually make their way to Canada.

"Hats off to the Peel police, who I know were bullied and told to back off of this," said Fatah. "They should really go after this."

No worry about that, said English. "We are not going away. We will see this right through to the end to make sure the right thing is done."

In Aqsa's honour.

Corporations aren't greedy, their owners are.

having said that though; should someone produce proof that iran is enriching iranium to levels suitable for use in weapons, then i favour bombing their facilities.

I disagree, bombing them will create more problems and it will actually make the regime more desperate to make nuclear bombs for self defence against possible future attacks.

i am concerned less with the regime and the political fallout and more with destroying their capacity to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels.

absolutely not. never implied that.

first off, companies like Exxon, BP, Conaco Phillips and most Western petro-giants are not allowed to do ANY business with Iran because Iran is has been declared by the international community as a State Sponsor of Terror.

even if they could do business with them, Iran would make darn sure that Iran would reap most of the benefits and petro-giants that chose to do business with them would have little recourse. look at Saudi Arabia.

second, take this chart:

Iran right now is the largest producer/potential of nationalized petrol product in the world. put simply, their government potentially controls the largest market share of petroleum exports in addition to what they use domestically. i don't know what the ratio is exactly between exports and domestically used product but i can imagine it's NEEDLESSLY skewed to the domestic side of the scale.

one way to relieve the problem they have is build more refining capacity. SO THEY CAN MAKE THEIR OWN GASOLINE AND NOT HAVE TO IMPORT IT and subsidize it to their own consumers. simple, right?

i mean what kind of f**king idiot would have to spend so much money importing his own gasoline when he sits on so much of it himself AND have to pay his own consumers to buy the imported gasoline. it's the dumbest scheme EVER!

Why do you think Russia is trying to clamp on every international corporation working in oil/gas/energy sectors? Because the natural reserves belong to Russians and only to them, not to some rich/CEO type who drives ferraries somewhere in Monaco.

ok.

ok, given what little i provided to you in the way of how he runs his country (btw i don't buy for one second HE actually "runs" things, but just for argument's sake) would you at least consider he's a "dumb" politician?

what you're basically telling me is that he's "edgy" and for some reason that appeals to you. big f**kin deal.

Dumb in what way, like Bush dumb? I disagree. Define "dumb" because i don't know if your saying it in regards to his way of running the country or just personally? If personally, then tell me why you think that? If it is politically, then nearly all politician never stays true to their word.

Oh and your right, don't believe for a second that he runs things, because Ali Khamenei does.

Welcome to the most complex political system in the world.

you made the blanket assertion that "he's smarter" (read less dumb). i don't think the onus is on me to prove that a guy that chooses to be what you concede as figurehead of an isolationist country, with as much resources as they have to be in the position they currently are, is smarter than the average politician.

Were refineries specifically banned - that's interesting.
