Cartoon ruling may prompt 'Islamophobia'

THE Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), a league of 57 Muslim nations, said a Danish court's rejection of a suit against a paper for printing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad could provoke "Islamophobia".

Last Thursday the High Court for western Denmark rejected a suit against Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that first published cartoons of Islam's prophet, leading to deadly protests in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The court said the editors had not meant to depict Muslims as criminals or terrorists, the cartoons had not broken the law, and there was a relationship between acts of violence and Islam - comments that provoked outcry among Muslim groups in Denmark.

"It is a known fact that acts of terror have been carried out in the name of Islam and it is not illegal to make satire out of this relationship," the court said.

The Saudi-based OIC, the largest grouping of Muslim countries, said the ruling could encourage "Islamophobia", a fear or dislike of Islam, which the group has identified as existing in the West.

"The Danish ruling came as a surprise to the OIC at a time when almost all Western governments including the USA had made categorical statements rejecting any linkage between Islam and terrorism," the OIC said.

"The linkage drawn by the Danish court ... could create a precedent for exacerbation of Islamophobia."

Many Muslims regard depictions of the Prophet as blasphemous. The Islamic Faith Society, one of the groups that brought the lawsuit against the Danish newspaper, said it might take its case to the European Court of Human Rights.

that's right folks. it isn't terrorism attacks. despotic rule. crimes against humanity. misogynistic practices. Or the retarded notion that blasphemy should be some kind of crime.

in reality it’s the high court in denmark that is creating a "fear" of islam.

the highlighted portion really gets my ire. where has the Islamic Faith Society been when islam has systematically abused human rights since, well, forever?

Its time "islamic councils" et al. make peace with these 'new' concepts of free speech and learn how to turn the other cheek. Islamic nations insult my strong beliefs every day and you don’t see me taking them to the high court. Islam needs to grow up.

my biggest problem with islam is that everyone is supposed to live by their morals and laws, while they can freely disregard our morals and laws. oh yeah, and this is all playing out in our countries; and they can't believe why there is a resentment and 'islamaphobia'.

Ehhh, those pesky Danish Muslims, so unhappy and so hurt and unhappy. Pride hurt? They should just pack up their balls and go back to their heavens in Middle East and Asia or whatever other rock they come from. Seriously. No need to worry about cartoons there. Am I being too islamophobic? They have no right and shouldn't bother changing OUR system, our way of things. They have theirs in their part of the world, and we have ours. When they try to use these tactics on us, they are technically exporting their views and their system on us. How repulsive.

While really they should get over it and move on. Freedom of speech is OUR way. Why the hell did they even imigrate if they dont understand that principle ... lemme guess - they want to turn Denmark and other Western countries into another Saudi Arabia or so. How thoughtful. I wonder where they will have to immigrate to after they have achieved that. Ungrateful ... disgraceful ... stupid ... ignorant

So, Denmark then?...

Perhaps black people in America that have a gripe with the government should off back to Africa? Right?

The analogy is fine, your ability to comprehend it seems a little limited...

Magentonium is saying that if Danish Muslims don't like Denmark they should go back to where they came from. Considering that "where" is likely Denmark, it's a stupid comment, about as stupid as saying that black people in America, if they don't like something about America, should go "back" to Africa. Both sets of people are extremely likely to be where they are from, so telling them to go elsewhere is just racist

oh I see............

once again you just ruined my buzz....

thanks allot

but I agree with mag & pkc in some ways, What one considers wrong is not wrong in my eyes... why should a person be punished for free speech??

this is essentially what these people want correct?? A limit on free speech just cause it offends them. Reminds me of Hustler Magazine vs. Farwell.

The Danish cartoon protesters, and their supporters around the world, are a bunch of idiots. I think religion should be criticised as it is cultural, and culture should also be criticised (hell, we do enough of criticising American culture around the world don't we?). If the criticism is valid, as criticism against the Danish protesters is, then I have no problem with that. But it has to be specific and valid. You can't use the experience of the Danish protesters, as some do, to speak out against Muslims in general. There is a fear of Muslims, understandably or not, that rose up following 9/11. Too many people see all Muslims as potential terrorists these days and it drives a wedge between populations that have had no problems whatsoever and I think that contributes somewhat to the radicalisation of youngsters from Muslim communities (the fundies can say to them - look, these people hate you, join us - etc)

It is substantially different for a white person in the US to tell an african american to go back to africa when the black person's family line has been in the US since the 1700s (much earlier than many white americans), the black person's ancestors were forcefully brought to the US, and the people telling the black people to go back to africa are the descendents of those who forced black people to come to this country. On the other hand, the large majority of muslims have been in europe for less than a generation, they are freely entering europe, and the average european doesn't want them in the europe.

EDIT: i don't know the numbers, but perhaps since you live in europe you could educate me on the percentage of muslims living in europe that are born outside of europe. A casual observation would suffice. I suspect it is very high.

If you're born somewhere and are a citizen of somewhere then for how many generations your family has lived there is completely irrelevant. If you're British your British, you can't "go back" anywhere because you are a national of Britain.

while that is true, i suspect the number of muslims born in europe is smaller than the number of muslims in europe born elsewhere. In any event, it is still not the same because muslims have a very short history in europe and they are unwelcome by many in europe. African americans, on the other hand, have a longer history in the US than most whites, and were not only welcome in the US, but forced to come to the US. EDIT: in fact, many blacks are so deep routed in the US that it would be more logical for them to call for italians or portugese to go back to europe. ;)

Focusing on whether the term 'go back' can logically occur is missing the point. The point is that muslims have consistently shown (at least the protesting kind) that their lifestyles and values are incompatible with westerners. If they are so unhappy at our social values and laws they shouldn't protest our traditions, rather, they should go where their values are prevalent. God forbid we protest something that is fundamental to muslims (even in our own countries); that would be a violation of human rights. However, we are supposed to be sensitive to their rights. I say, off! It's hypocrisy at its finest.
