Oh yeah, I think that kind of "keeping up appearances" mentality can be mapped onto a lot of different situations.
I just happen to find it particularly annoying with the hipster set because it's just so ing transparent. |

as for me my music selection is pretty much guided by one principle, and that is that I just sense something deeply spiritual or inspired in the music. it's completely subjective i suppose, but i think there are some things that are universally emotional. it's sort of like tapping into a huge cosmic river of collective consciousness. It's why I prefer tracks that sound 'timeless' to tracks that sound 'timely', ie trendy or faddy. |
Yeah, and then there are some people who listen to techno and say crackpot stuff, like "its very spiritual, or inspired" and that "techno is universally emotional" and "timeless"...sort of like stuff that "trancers" say...

well, it's true, there is a lot of trance music that is very inspired/timeless
i mean think of sven vath - ballett fusion or 'a new day' or 'ritual of life'.
there's a ton of music in general. why do you think most religious rituals in human history feature some sort of musical aspect? (and dance as well)
I don't mind 'trance-crackers' per se, just people who do not bother to constantly look deeper, beyond the lasers and smoke of their current illusions

The notion of what qualifies as "going deeper" is also subjective :p

No, i didn't mean that about trance. I just quoted what you said just to show that what you just said could be the result of an illusion as well. I guess that many people listening to epic-trance feel exactly like you, whereas (i guess that) you would categorise many of them under a few simplistic dimensions, leaving yourself as the "elegant experienced perceiver" of true "timeless music", whereas in truth you, could be (are) like them. As you correctly said, knowing these delusions/illusions, makes one to understand that the "timeless musical moment" is bound to ones perception of the (musical) moment within a specific context, and not to any music that exists out there.Now if you want to argue about a music's complexity and structure, you can argue that but this is not the same.
