The death of a 21-year-old woman found unconscious on the floor at a Markham rave club this weekend has some residents urging Club Rio be shut down because it brings drugs and violence into their community.
Police were called to the club on Woodbine Ave. after security guards found the woman lying alone and unconscious at the back of the club at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
She wasn't breathing, the security guards could not find a pulse, and she was frothing at the mouth.
"She was left to die at the back of the club," said a police officer at the scene.
While it wasn't a "clear" drug overdose, Det. Const. Michael Boris of York Regional Police said yesterday the victim's body had no signs of physical trauma.
After an autopsy yesterday was unable to pinpoint the cause of death, the officer said it could take months to complete toxicology results.
The victim is from Surrey, B.C. Her name was being withheld until police contacted her family.
She was seen in the club with two men and may have arrived there with a woman, witnesses told police.
Alex Chiu, a Markham councillor for almost 25 years, says local calls to close down the site began several years ago, when it was known as Viva Night Club, because of reports of drug-related activity and violent encounters.
When a 17-year-old was stabbed to death there in 2002 during a fight between two groups, criticisms of the club escalated, he said.
"People want to close it up. I hear people complain about ... so much trouble happening there," Chiu said yesterday.
"I'd expect more people to demand to shut it down now. As a town, we have to do something ..."
The Rio is an after hours club for all ages and operates without a liquor licence, Boris said.
Police do constant checks of guests in the parking lot and have often busted kids for possession of illegal drugs, the officer said.
Most of the arrests are for ecstasy, ketamine and other narcotics that are popular in the rave culture, he said.
When the Star called Club Rio for comment yesterday, a man who answered the phone refused to provide his name.
Over blaring music, he said he would not comment on criticisms of the club until police had issued a formal report.
Police say the club, located in a plaza at 8261 Woodbine Ave., changed ownership and was renamed Club Rio last year, Boris said.
"Markham is pretty quiet in way of a bar scene, but this one definitely catches our attention."

The woman police say was left for dead in a Markham area club has been identified as Nicole Le, 21, of Surrey, B.C.
She was found at the back of Club Rio at 8261 Woodbine Ave. around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday unconscious and frothing at the mouth.
Emergency crews rushed her to Markham Stouffville Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy was performed later that day but results were inconclusive and investigators say they are awaiting toxicology reports.

Police have released a photo of the young woman who died at a Markham-area club in the hopes of jogging the memories of any potential witnesses.
Nicole Le, 21, of Surry B.C. died around 4:30 Saturday morning at Club Rio on Woodbine Ave. near Hwy. 407.
Autopsy results were inconclusive and toxicology reports can take many weeks to complete so detectives are hoping so speak with those who may have information about the case.
