The media loves to whore out a story like this. I love the "rave" buzzword they are trying to recycle. Reporters know damned well that "rave" is no longer a current term to describe a party but they use it to sensationalize the story for the common idiot.

The thing about the girl in Rio is really scary.. how could people not realize what was happening? where was security? So many questions.. I've been to that place before when my friend was playing there, and it is really super sketchy, and kind of out of control.. it's a zoo, the bouncers don't do their jobs at all as far as duty of care goes.. and for the chick to be dead by the time they saw her, she must have been there a while before anyone noticed.... it's soo sad. :( And disgusting. very.

The NPC would not be happy with this.. aside from popular belief, greek life is not about degradation, drugs, and drinking. They're there as an example, and one of their primary purposes is to do good as philanthropic organizations. It's a great community for that as well as other benefits i.e. networking. As well, the National Pan-Hellenic Conference and all associated fraternities and sororities have strict rules that greek organizations all abide by, to protect image and integrity as well as for the safety of everyone who is involved in a greek club belonging to the NPC. And these guys are in some , lol.. not only do they have to deal with the cops, but with the university AND the NPC.. ahh. I'm so surprised the chapter and alumni would even let this happen. It's a shame, and makes the whole idea of greek life to look like animal house and beyond - whatever stereotypical image you can think of - when it is really, really not.
If their name is DKE though wouldn't the frat name be Delta Kappa Epsilon, and the chapter name Alpha Phi? I've never seen a greek organization name that long in my life, lol.. anyway, nevermind, not important. |

The bouncers did their job. They found this girl and tried to help. I blame the person who took the drugs (if there were drugs taken). If it was a medical condition, then i blame nature. I mildly also blame the friends although not so much as this girl was an adult and should be capable of being responsible for herself.
This is a tragedy but laying blame on everyone other than the person who is ultimately responsible for their own actions is wrong.

Yup, the media sensationalizes yet again. Not every frat/sorority person is a drunk idiot or high on drugs and neither is every person at an afterhours club. But to read these stories youd think otherwise.
So who is responsible in the greek situtation? The individual or the instituion? Isnt it the institution's obligation to make sure this doesnt happen? Or does the responsibility rely with the perpetrator? |

No.. I mean when I was at Rio the one time, it didn't seem like the bouncers were really doing anything, they stood in one place and weren't making rounds or anything and barely paid attention to anyone around them. So of course this makes it seem like they aren't doing a whole lot. Maybe they are, but that's the impression it gave. Hopefully it was just the one night and it's not like that all the time, but I hope you can see how it would make it seem, at least from one person's point of view.
And as far as the greek situation goes, these were choices made by what seems to be the fraternity chapter or individuals and should not reflect back upon thier organization or upon greek life as a whole.. even if regional or national members come to visit the chapter (as they normally do about once a year for us, i am not sure about these guys) it's something that could probably be hidden. So yes, the institution does check up but we don't know what they may or may not have seen while there. When something like this is out in the open, such as the police busting them therefore making it impossible to hide or deny, then of course measures will be taken and the perpetrators - whether the chapter or individuals - will be held accountable. |

i'm sorry but bouncers in clubs for the most part don't DO ..
i have had to alert staff at venues several times..in one instance there was a girl looking half dead...with five of her friends surrounding her..wiht one of the girls bawling her eyes out..in an open patio situation..and not ONE bouncer noticed???? give me a break..i had to go and let someone know..the sick thing is..there were so many people there and i was the only one who actually had the balls to alert security..and the chick was taken away by paramedics btw...
so before some of you freak out about the media and how they portray this ..why don't we all take a look at ourselves and our scene..how many of you have stood around when there is someone obviously passed out in trouble?? who cares how the "scene" is portrayed..we should be outraged that a young girl is dead and not sit here and pick apart a news article cuz it doesn't paint doing drugs in a positive light.. |

Maybe it's cuz i look like a terrorist at times, but I have always seen bouncers actively looking around and walking around to make sure things are in check, including the smoking patio at This Is London, Guv main room, Skybar, KH, the Docks, and Rio/Viva. At Viva I remember Hardcore Trancer would hardly be able to enjoy the trance because he'd always be walking off taking care of .
I completely disagree with the above bouncer-bashing comments; the only complaint I have is that in some cases involving me a few have overreacted, but I guess they normally deal with drunk/high/aggressive scum so they have standard operating procedures, lol.
ps. security at Ricoh Coliseum was awesome. ALWAYS scanning the crowd and almost kicking out 2 nearby smokers (lol they didn't conceal it as well as me :p) |
