What it is with those goddamned US remakes of Asian movies. I'm not saying they're all bad, but can't these idiots devote their time and money to making an original movie?! There's nothing more useless that a remake of a movie that's just 2 years old.
Definitely agree. Okay, like I've said, I prefer Ring over Ringu, but most of those remakes are pretty pointless. I do know the reason why, though. Hollywood. Money. Those two words sum it up, nothing else needs to be said.

Because everyone in Hollywood is unoriginal. The only remake I ever saw that I thought was better than the original was Rob Zombie's Halloween. The fact that it gave a more in depth look at his childhood just set it apart from the original.

its only a matter of time before 'the thing' gets remade too. itll probably be the job of the bell end who did AVP / AVP2. they wont invest any time in building up character personalities or a connection between the characters and the audience. everything will be CGI to the point where it looks like we are watching a cut scene from a video game. they'll decide to kit the characters out with loads of high-tech gear to feed the current plastic generation with their spiderman loving e. there will be over the top explosions that would only be possible if they were based in a bomb factory, meaning the story will change and they will no longer be scientific researchers, but instead, bomb experts. There will be a typically hot chick or two thrown in there to keep the idiots in the audience happy, and let me guess... it will be a girl and a guy that survive. and the writers wont be able to leave the film where the 80's version ends. instead they will ruin it by going over the top and shout and scream that one of the two survivors is the alien. lastly, they will throw in a suggestion that the creature makes it to civilisation in order for them to easily mae a follow up film to line their pockets should they not get any more contracts in the near future.

Blah. I just don't consider it horror. Meat187 brought this up too, and the more I think about it, the less I agree.
Event Horizon. Creepy as ? YES. But it's totally sci-fi. Would you call Alien, or Aliens, proper horror? I personally wouldn't.

yes and no.
Event Horizon was made to scare the bejezus out of people, that didn't happen by accident. Alien etc isn't really the same, I'd say its mroe of an action movie end of the spectrum of sci-fi.

I'm not sure sci-fi is the dominant element in Event Horizon. Allright, there's a spaceship and stuff about interdimensional travel, but what makes the movie imho are fears, evil possesion, nightmares, etc. Typical horror stuff. It does mix the two genres, but I think horror is the main theme.
But as I already said, this sort of discussion is pointless. Who cares what you call it, as long it's an enjoyable movie. I wouldn't even know how to name Lost Highway (that's also been mentioned here).

I think it has something to do with space being automatically associated with science fiction.
We're not used to seeing horrors based in space.
Something like Ghosts Of Mars, it's a wannabe horror, but in reality it's an action/SF movie.
