You did not just say that!

The original Saw was amazing, great special effects, very original concept, stellar acting, and above all, a very twisted and unexpected ending.

The sequels are progressively worse, but I don't see how anyone can rubbish the first.

What it is with those goddamned US remakes of Asian movies. I'm not saying they're all bad, but can't these idiots devote their time and money to making an original movie?! There's nothing more useless that a remake of a movie that's just 2 years old.

Mainstream America seems to have a very hard time accepting anything that's not made "in-house".

Yeah, yeah, I'm Yank bashing, *again*, but this stems from an insular culture which makes it harder, or perhaps takes the will away from the general population to enjoy, relate to, or even in extreme cases, comprehend outside material altogether. I've heard of UK television shows exported to the US...WITH SUBTITLES. :wtf:

My 2c on horror movies: in the main I think they are complete rubbish, usually lacking story lines. I prefer a "psychological" thriller, which is essentially horror with a decent plot.

Far and away my favourite is Identity, a multi-murder mystery. It's quite improbable, but the acting is tops and the directing and storyline are excellent too.

For straight horror, I can't believe no one has mentioned Hitchcock! Psycho achieved so much with so little! Hardly any gore or skin, but it's creepy as hell.

I think I might rent Event Horizon tonight.

its only a matter of time before 'the thing' gets remade too. itll probably be the job of the bell end who did AVP / AVP2. they wont invest any time in building up character personalities or a connection between the characters and the audience. everything will be CGI to the point where it looks like we are watching a cut scene from a video game. they'll decide to kit the characters out with loads of high-tech gear to feed the current plastic generation with their spiderman loving e. there will be over the top explosions that would only be possible if they were based in a bomb factory, meaning the story will change and they will no longer be scientific researchers, but instead, bomb experts. There will be a typically hot chick or two thrown in there to keep the idiots in the audience happy, and let me guess... it will be a girl and a guy that survive. and the writers wont be able to leave the film where the 80's version ends. instead they will ruin it by going over the top and shout and scream that one of the two survivors is the alien. lastly, they will throw in a suggestion that the creature makes it to civilisation in order for them to easily mae a follow up film to line their pockets should they not get any more contracts in the near future.

LOL! Funny, but I think you're probably right. :(

Bump.

I've been on a horror kick. I re-watched Event Horizon and Alien recently and enjoyed them, and I bought The Thing today because it's one of my favorites.

I still want to see Eraserhead but haven't found it at any of the local video places.

DO IT!
Eraserhead is very much hit or miss with most people, but if the atmosphere does grab you it'll scare the out of you.

Apart from that I see that the horror genre in general is in a totally pathetic state right now. Scream revived the Slasher genre in the late 90s and in the last years we had a wave of what I call torture porn (SAW, Hostel, etc.) but now I just don't see anything new coming up. Some ty and useless remakes of Japanes stuff in the past years, but the genre looks pretty dead right now.

I read somewhere that Guillermo del Toro wants to do Lovecraft's 'At the Mountains of Madness' after finishing The Hobbit, and that's just about the only hope I see right now. SAW Part 6 to 324654 or the next Rob Zombie certainly won't bring up anything valueable.

Yeah, I don't see anything particularly interesting on the horizon. I'm just going through "classics" and recommendations now as I've never explored horror all that extensively. Never seen The Shining, for example, and I've only seen half of The Exorcist. But I plan to see both.

I don't like "torture porn" horror that's just straight-ahead graphic brutality. That's boring to me. There has to be some kind of atmosphere, anticipation, and interest in the story to go with it. My favorite horror movies do have some nasty violence or grossout moments in them -- The Thing, The Fly, Alien, Event Horizon -- but it's not so relentless that it numbs and bores me.

I'll be seeing this movie called "Drag Me to Hell" that just opened this weekend. It's been getting a lot of hype because it's from director Sam Raimi famous for the Spiderman trilogy and Evil Dead movies. Everyone has been raving about how scary to it.

Burn Notice
Martyrs is one of the best horror movies to come out in the last few years.

looks uninspired and typical

Martyrs sounds like more torture porn. "Well, isn't that nasty? See how long you can take the sight of somebody being skinned alive!"

:p

Ghost Raver
Noroi was a good one. IMDB

Definitely worth a check.

There is no question that the movie has a good amount of torture, but beneath is an interesting storyline and a great plot twist. There is also a bunch of different genres of horror thrown in to keep everything fresh. For me, it's what Hostel should have been.
