Won't quote this douchebaggery in its entirety, but just because you did something for personal enjoyment/fulfillment as opposed to money (i.e. "amateur") doesn't mean that other people have the right to use it for free. That's what intellectual property laws are for.

Of course, as others have said, a club video isn't exactly a goldmine, but if they want so far as to ask for permission then I'm sure they'd be willing to give you beer money.

I agree with asking for $75 and a credit. They'll probably knock it down to $50 (well, Steve Lawler, so maybe they offer $0 with just a credit) and say take it or leave it. If it were me, I'd settle for a credit.

Most likely that's the best. I'm also thinking that if I managed to get a mere pittance for it and The Guv got wind of it, they might ban me from bringing the cam in 'cause I'm not going in as a fan but as to try to make money.

i don't think that would be an issue.
Nightclub photographers show up all the time that are there taking pics for sites that have nothing to do with them.

at the end of the day, it's also promo for their club, AND you also paid to get in. They win regardless ;)

You're lucky they emailed you asking (smart idea not making your videos available for download). My friend Peter - some of you may know him from the NYC forums as fotoaddict - took a picture of Armin doing some warehouse party in NYC a few years back and had it posted on Flicker. Mixmag took the picture, without telling him and it's now on the cover of the MixMag CD for this month.

why? i don't get it, if anything he can say now that they put his image on the cover, what more do you need?

as for the video ask for a credit to be put, good promotion for yourself imo

He didn't care about getting money for the photo...simply credit - which he didn't get. Same as what Jay wants for his picture I'm assuming. They took the picture off his Flickr page, where his pictures were marked for non-commercial use only.

I like the suggestions of just asking for credit (I'd slide in a 'thank you' for them asking in the first place, that you're flattered, and that if they could score you VIP access the next time he's here, you'd be grateful).

$$$ = paperwork to cut a cheque and that's a pain in the ass, regardless of the amount. a credit + sticking you on a VIP list is easily achieved with minimal drama.

anyway, congrats! that is pretty cool ;)

DOOOD!! you should have made this thread in some other forum. This can only result in more cameramen at events.

I doubt that very much. You can't believe how much of a pain in the ass it can be sometimes to haul that thing around for an 8-10hr event. There's always the threat of loosing it by putting it down and forgetting about it (you know how that can be easy to do if your "partied up"). Then there's getting your groove on when the slammin tunes get your blood boiling to dance. There's no one to hold on to the dam thing, so your stuck to dance with it.
