I'll take it one step further. If you need applications then a PC is the way to go. If you want to be a douche then by a Mac.

I recently bought a Macbook for DJing, which is the first Mac I have used since my Apple II in the early 90's.

I have to say, my opinion is mixed.

The package is put together wonderfully, everything is very sexy, but at the same time incredibly wanky.

"Designed by Apple in California" - yet built by slave labour in China. Who really cares where something was designed?

My main problem with Apple is that they try so hard to sell a lifestyle and image rather than just a great product, though they do have some simple and clever ideas, such as the magnetic power cord and lid latch rather than mechanical catches.

I found the computer very easy to set up and use, and the graphics are worlds better than anything I've ever seen on a PC.

However!

I'm a competent computer user and not prone to ing up my machine. I've always found that although Windows is slightly harder to use than Mac OS, it is very hard to it up completely - Windows will nearly always warn you if you are doing something stupid.

In the first week of having OSX, I managed to my computer completely by selecting "properties" on the hard drive and setting permissions to "read and write" for everything, simply because some of my files had become locked. There was no warning to tell me this was dangerous.

This caused the notebook to stop booting up and eventually wasted about 6 hours of my time in order to fix. Nothing like that has ever happened to me in my 15 odd years of using Windows.

I think both platforms have their upsides and downsides really. I prefer Windows because that's what I'm used to, but all said and done the two are probably pretty equal.

My next adventure is Linux, I tried to install that a few weeks ago on an old laptop and failed hard - computer not good enough I think.

I suspect I'll eventually find that Linux is better than both Windows and Mac.

What is the problem with Vista?!?!?!? Everyone says that Vista sucks but it kicks ass. If you don't like Vista please list the reasons why.

  • Hardware (even new) doesn't run well on vista
  • Security overkill
  • Lack of drivers
  • Lack of compatibility
  • e start bar navigation
  • Resource hogger
  • Cheap Apple imitation look
  • graphics performance
  • Poor functioning power options for laptops

Shall I go on? Vista was only really created as a stand in until Windows 7 is completed. It won't become the industry standard and will eventually be ditched like ME was - On a related note I hear support for XP will be extended vastly, and as such, anyone that opts for Vista over XP is simply an idiot.

I have been using computers since the days of Apple IIEs (25+ years ago) and I consider myself an high level computer user. To say someone is an "idiot" for using Vista over XP is simply silly. Look, the complaints you make about Vista are the complaints you hear from someone that either does not use Vista, used it when it first came out, is trying to run it on hardware that its not designed to run or is a Mac user. I have been using Vista now about about 1 year on a 2.4 Gig quad core with 8 Megs or memory that cost me about $700 and I have had nothing but an enjoyable experience. Say what you want, Vista kicks ass.

I use all 3 (Vista, XP and OSX) and support all 3 on a daily basis. The list I posted comes from personal experience and nothing else so I'm well within my rights to post what I did.

Maybe, maybe not.

I've had ZERO problems with Vista, it works even much better than tired old XP. I don't get it what people do to make it not work. :conf:

In The Lobby
ok so im going with the macbook.

i need to run Final Cut and as it turns out that software is not compatible with any of Microsoft operating systems. at this point i have no choice.
iammesol
Hope you're not running tons of layers. Final Cut is one hefty program that (sometimes) even the MacBook can't handle. I don't think it should be a huge problem, but just make sure you load that bitch with RAM.

Regardless, congrats. :)
